प्रस्तुत पाठ ‘शुक्र तारे के समान’ में लेखक ने गाँधी जी के निजी सचिव महादेव भाई देसाई की बेजोड़ प्रतिभा और व्यस्ततम दिनचर्या को उकेरा है। उन्होंने महादेव भाई की तुलना शुक्र तारे से की है जो सारे आकाश को जगमगा कर, दुनिया को मुग्ध करके अस्त हो जाता है। सन 1917 में में वे गांधीजी से मिले तब गांधीजी ने उन्हें अपना उत्तराधिकारी का पद सौंप दिया। सन 1919 में जलियाँवाला बाग़ हत्याकांड के दिनों में गांधीजी ने गिरफ्तार होते समय महादेव जी को अपना वारिस कहा था। उन दिनों गांधीजी के सामने अंग्रेज़ों द्वारा अत्याचारों और जुल्मो की जो दल कहानियाँ सुनाने आते थे, महादेव भाई उनकी संक्ष्पित टिप्पणियाँ बनाकर उन्हें रु-बू-रु मिलवाते थे।

‘क्रॉनिकल’ के संपादक हार्नीमैन को देश निकाले की सजा मिलने पर ‘यंग इंडिया’ साप्ताहिक में लेखों की कमी पड़ने लगी चूँकि हार्नीमैन ही मुख्य रूप से लेख लिखते थे। इसीलिए ये जिमेदारी गांधीजी ने ले ली, बाद में उनका काम बढ़ने के कारण इस अखबार को सप्ताह में दो बार निकालना पड़ा। कुछ दिन बाद अखबार की जिमेवारी लेखक के हाथों में आ गयी। महादेव भाई और गांधीजी का सारा समय देश-भम्रण में बीतने लगा, परन्तु महादेव जी जहाँ भी होते समय निकालकर लेख लिखते और भेजते। महादेव भाई गांधीजी के यात्राओं और दिन प्रतिदिन की गतिविधियों के बारे में लिखते, साथ ही देश-विदेश के समाचारों को पढ़कर उसपर टिका-टिप्पणियाँ भी लिखते।अपने तीर्व बुद्धि के कारण देसी-विदेशी समाचार पत्र वालों के ये लाड़ले बन गए। गांधीजी के पास आने से पहले ये सरकार के अनुवाद विभाग में नौकरी करते थे। इन्होने कई साहित्यों का अनुवाद किया था।

गांधीजी के पत्रों में महादेव भाई की लिखावट होती थी। उनकी लिखावट लम्बी सी जेट की गति सी लिखी जाती थी, वे शॉर्टहैंड नही जानते थे, परन्तु उनकी लेखनी में कॉमा मात्र की भी गलती नही होती थी इसलिए गांधीजी भी अपने मिलने वालों से बातचीत को उनकी नोटबुक से मिलान करने को कहते थे। वे अपने बड़े-बड़े झोलों में ताजे समाचार पात्र और पुस्तकें रखा करते जिसे वे  रेलगाड़ी, रैलियों तथा सभाओं में पढ़ते थे या फिर ‘नवजीवन’ या ‘यंग इंडिया’ के लिए लेख लिखते रहते। वे इतने वयस्थ समय में अपने लिए कब वक्त निकालते पता नही चलता, एक घंटे में चार घंटो का काम निपटा देते। महादेव भाई गांधीजी के जीवन में इतने रच-बस-गए थे की उनके बिना महदेव भाई की अकेले कल्पना नही की जा सकती।

उन्होंने गांधीजी की पुस्तक ‘सत्य का प्रयोग’ का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद भी किया। सन 1934-35 में गांधीजी मगनवाड़ी से चलकर सेगांव चले गए परन्तु महादेव जी मगंवादी में ही रहे। वे रोज वहां से पैदल चलकर सेगांव जाते तथा शाम को काम निपटाकर वापस आते, जो की कुल 11 मिल था। इस कारण उनके स्वास्थ्य पर प्रतिकूल प्रभाव पड़ा और वे अकाल मृत्यु को प्राप्त हुए। इनके मृत्यु का दुःख गांधीजी को आजीवन रहा।
