जल प्रलय में’ फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु द्वारा लिखित रिपोर्ताज है, जिसमें उन्होंने सन 1975 ई० में पटना में आई प्रलयंकारी बाढ़ का आँखों देखे हाल का वर्णन किया है।

लेखक का गाँव एक ऐसे क्षेत्र में था, जहाँ की विशाल और परती ज़मीन पर सावन-भादों के महीनों में पश्चिम, पूर्व और दक्षिण में बहने वाली कोसी, पनार, महानंदा और गंगा की बाढ़ से पीड़ित मानव व पशुओं का समूह शरण लेता था। सन 1967 में भयंकर बाढ़ आई थी, तब पूरे शहर और मुख्यमंत्री निवास तक के डूबने की खबरें सुनाई देती रहीं। लेखक बाढ़ के प्रभाव व प्रकोप को देखने के लिए अपने एक कवि मित्र के साथ निकले। तभी आते-जाते लोगों द्वारा आपस में जिज्ञासावश एक-दूसरे को बाढ़ की सूचना से अवगत कराते देख लेखक गांधी मैदान के पास खड़े लोगों के पास गए।

शाम को साढ़े सात बजे पटना के आकाशवाणी केंद्र ने घोषणा की कि पानी आकाशवाणी के स्टूडियो की सीढ़ियों तक पहुँच गया है। बाढ़ का पानी देखकर आ रहे लोग पान की दुकानों पर खड़े हँस-बोलकर समाचार सुन रहे थे, परंतु लेखक और उनके मित्र के चेहरों पर उदासी थी। कुछ लोग ताश खेलने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। राजेंद्रनगर चौराहे पर मैगज़ीन कॉर्नर पर पूर्ववत पत्र-पत्रिकाएँ बिक रही थीं। लेखक कुछ पत्रिकाएँ लेकर तथा अपने मित्र से विदा लेकर अपने फ़्लैट में आ गए।

वहाँ उन्हें जनसंपर्क विभाग की गाड़ी से लाउडस्पीकर पर की गई बाढ़ से संबंधित घोषणाएँ सुनाई दीं। उसमें सबको सावधान रहने के लिए कहा गया। रात में देर तक जगने के बाद लेखक सोना चाहते हैं, पर नींद नहीं आती। वे कुछ लिखना चाहते हैं और तभी उनके दिमाग में कुछ पुरानी यादें तरोताजा हो जाती हैं। सन 1947 में मनिहारी शिले में बाढ़ आई थी। लेखक गुरु जी के साथ नाव पर दवा, किरोसन तेल, ‘पकाही घाव’ की दवा और दियासलाई आदि लेकर सहायता करने के लिए वहाँ गए थे।

इसके बाद 1949 में महानंदा नदी ने भी बाढ़ का कहर बरपाया था। लेखक वापसी थाना के एक गाँव में बीमारों को नाव पर चढ़ाकर कैंप ले जा रहे थे, तभी एक बीमार के साथ उसका कुत्ता भी नाव पर चढ़ गया। जब लेखक अपने साथियों के साथ एक टीले के पास पहुँचे तो वहाँ एक ऊँची स्टेश बनाकर ‘बलवाही’ का नाच हो रहा था और लोग मछली भूनकर खा रहे थे। एक काला-कलूटा ‘नटुआ’ लाल साड़ी में दुलहन के हाव-भाव को दिखा रहा था।

फिर एक बार सन 1967 ई० में जब पुनपुन का पानी राजेंद्रनगर में घुस गया, तो कुछ सजे-धजे युवक-युवतियों की टोली नाव पर स्टोव, केतली, बिस्कुट आदि लेकर जल-विहार करने निकले। उनके ट्रांजिस्टर पर ‘हवा में उड़ता जाए’ गाना बज रहा था। जैसे ही उनकी नाव गोलंबर पहुंची और ब्लॉकों की छतों पर खड़े लड़कों ने उनकी खिल्ली उड़ानी शुरू कर दी, तो वे दुम दबाकर हवा हो गए।

रात के ढाई बजे का समय थापर पानी अभी तक वहाँ नहीं आया था। लेखक को लगा कि शायद इंजीनियरों ने तटबंध ठीक कर दिया हो। लेखक को नींद आ गई। सुबह साढ़े पाँच बजे जब लोगों ने उन्हें जगाया तो लेखक ने देखा कि सभी जागे हुए थे और पानी मोहल्ले में दस्तक दे चुका था। चारों ओर शोर-कोलाहल-कलरव, चीख-पुकार और पानी की लहरों का नृत्य दिखाई दे रहा था। चारों ओर पानी ही पानी दिखाई दे रहा था। पानी बहुत तेजी से चढ़ रहा था। लेखक ने बाढ़ का दृश्य तो अपने बचपन में भी देखा था, परंतु इस तरह अचानक पानी का चढ़ आना उन्होंने पहली बार देखा था।
