इस गंभीर अनंत-नीलिमा में असंख्‍य जीवन-इतिहास

यह लो, करते ही रहते हैं अपने व्‍यंग्‍य मलिन उपहास

तब भी कहते हो-कह डालूँ दुर्बलता अपनी बीती।

तुम सुनकर सुख पाओगे, देखोगे-यह गागर रीती।

अर्थ - इस कविता में कवि ने अपने अपनी आत्मकथा न लिखने के कारणों को बताया है। कवि कहते हैं कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति का मन रूपी भौंरा प्रेम गीत गाता हुआ अपनी कहानी सुना रहा है। झरते पत्तियों की ओर इशारा करते हुए कवि कहते हैं कि आज असंख्य पत्तियाँ मुरझाकर गिर रही हैं यानी उनकी जीवन लीला समाप्त हो रही है। इस प्रकार अंतहीन नील आकाश के नीचे हर पल अनगिनित जीवन का इतिहास बन और बिगड़ रहा है। इस माध्यम से कवि कह रहे हैं की इस संसार में हर कुछ चंचल है, कुछ भी स्थिर नही है। यहाँ प्रत्येक व्यक्ति एक दूसरे के मज़ाक बनाने में लगे हैं, हर किसी को दूसरे में कमी नजर आती है। अपनी कमी कोई नही कहता, यह जानते हुए भी तुम मेरी आत्मकथा जानना चाहते हो। कवि कहता है कि यदि वह उन पर बीती हुई कहानी वह सुनाते हैं तो लोगों को उससे आनंद तो मिलेगा, परन्तु साथ ही वे यह भी देखेंगे की कवि का जीवन सुख और प्रसन्नता से बिलकुल ही खाली है।

किंतु कहीं ऐसा न हो कि तुम ही खाली करने वाले-

अपने को समझो, मेरा रस ले अपनी भरने वाले।

यह विडंबना! अरी सरलते हँसी तेरी उड़ाऊँ मैं।

भूलें अपनी या प्रवंचना औरों की दिखलाऊँ मैं।

उज्‍ज्‍वल गाथा कैसे गाऊँ, मधुर चाँदनी रातों की।

अरे खिल-खिलाकर हँसतने वाली उन बातों की।

मिला कहाँ वह सुख जिसका मैं स्‍वप्‍न देकर जाग गया।

आलिंगन में आते-आते मुसक्‍या कर जो भाग गया।

अर्थ - कवि कहते हैं कि उनका जीवन स्वप्न के समान एक छलावा रहा है। जीवन में जो कुछ वो पाना चाहते हैं वह सब उनके पास आकर भी दूर हो गया। यह उनके जीवन की विडंबना है। वे अपनी इन कमज़ोरियों का बखान कर जगहँसाई नही करा सकते। वे अपने छले जाने की कहानी नहीं सुनाना चाहता। जिस प्रकार सपने में व्यक्ति को अपने मन की इच्छित वस्तु मिल जाने से वह प्रसन्न हो जाता है, उसी प्रकार कवि के जीवन में भी पएक बार प्रेम आया था परन्तु वह स्वपन की भांति टूट गया। उनकी सारी आकांक्षाएँ महज मिथ्या बनकर रह गयी चूँकि वह सुख का स्पर्श पाते-पाते वंचित रह गए। इसलिए कवि कहते हैं कि यदि तुम मेरे अनुभवों के सार से अपने जीवन का घड़ा भरने जा रहे हो तो मैं अपनी उज्जवल जीवन गाथा कैसे सुना सकता हूँ।

जिसके अरूण-कपोलों की मतवाली सुन्‍दर छाया में।

अनुरागिनी उषा लेती थी निज सुहाग मधुमाया में।

उसकी स्‍मृति पाथेय बनी है थके पथिक की पंथा की।

सीवन को उधेड़ कर देखोगे क्‍यों मेरी कंथा की?

छोटे से जीवन की कैसे बड़े कथाएँ आज कहूँ?

क्‍या यह अच्‍छा नहीं कि औरों की सुनता मैं मौन रहूँ?

सुनकर क्‍या तुम भला करोगे मेरी भोली आत्‍मकथा?

अभी समय भी नहीं, थकी सोई है मेरी मौन व्‍यथा।

अर्थ - इन पंक्तियों में कवि अपने सुन्दर सपनों का उल्लेख करते हुए कहते हैं कि उनके जीवन में कुछ सुखद पल आये जिनके सहारे वे वर्तमान जीवन बिता रहे हैं। उन्होंने प्रेम के अनगनित सपने संजोये थे परन्तु वे सपने मात्र रह गए, वास्तविक जीवन में उन्हें कुछ ना मिल सका। कवि अपने प्रेयसी के सुन्दर लाल गालों का वर्णन करते हुए कहते हैं कि मानो भोर अपनी लाली उनकी प्रेयसी के गालों की लाली से प्राप्त करती है परन्तु अब ऐसे रूपसी की छवि अब उनका सहारा बनकर रह गयी है क्योंकि वास्तविक जीवन वे क्षण कवि को मिलने से पहले ही छिटक कर दूर चले गए। इसलिए कवि कहते हैं कि मेरे जीवन की कथा को जानकर तुम क्या करोगे, अपने जीवन को वे छोटा समझ कर अपनी कहानी नही सुनाना चाहते। इसमें कवि की सादगी और विनय का स्पष्ट प्रमाण मिलता है। वे दूसरों के जीवन की कथाओं को सुनने और जानने में ही अपनी भलाई समझते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि अभी उनके जीवन की कहानी सुनाने का वक़्त नही आया है। मेरे अतीतों को मत कुरेदो, उन्हें मौन रहने दो।
