हालदार साहब को हर पन्द्रहवें दिन कम्पनी के काम से एक छोटे कस्बे से गुजरना पड़ता था। उस कस्बे में एक लड़कों का स्कूल, एक लड़कियों का स्कूल, एक सीमेंट का कारखाना, दो ओपन सिनेमा घर तथा एक नगरपालिका थी। नगरपालिका थी तो कुछ ना कुछ करती रहती थी, कभी सड़के पक्की करवाने का काम तो कभी शौचालय तो कभी कवि सम्मेलन करवा दिया। एक बार नगरपालिका के एक उत्साही अधिकारी ने मुख्य बाज़ार के चैराहे पर सुभाषचन्द्र बोस की संगमरमर की प्रतिमा लगवा दी। चूँकि बजट ज्यादा नही था इसलिए मूर्ति बनाने का काम कस्बे के इकलौते हाई स्कूल के  शिक्षक को सौंपा गया। मूर्ति सुन्दर बनी थी बस एक चीज़ की कमी थी, नेताजी की आँख पर चश्मा नहीं था। एक सचमुच के चश्मे का चौड़ा काला फ्रेम मूर्ति को पहना दिया गया। जब हालदार साहब आये तो उन्होंने सोचा वाह भई! यह आईडिया ठीक है। मूर्ति पत्थर की पर चश्मा रियल। दूसरी बार जब हालदार साहब आये तो उन्हें मूर्ति पर तार का फ्रेम वाले गोल चश्मा लगा था। तीसरी बार फिर उन्होंने नया चश्मा पाया। इस बार वे पानवाले से पूछ बैठे कि नेताजी का चश्मा हरदम बदल कैसे जाता है। पानवाले ने बताया की यह काम कैप्टन चश्मेवाला करता है। हालदार साहब को समझते देर न लगी की बिना चश्मे वाली मूर्ति कैप्टेन को ख़राब लगती होगी इसलिए अपने उपलब्ध फ्रेम में से एक को वह नेताजी के मूर्ति पर फिट कर देता होगा। जब कोई ग्राहक वैसे ही फ्रेम की मांग करता जैसा मूर्ति पर लगा है तो वह उसे मूर्ति से उतारकर ग्राहक को दे देता और मूर्ति पर नया फ्रेम लगा देता चूँकि मूर्ति बनाने वाला मास्टर चश्मा भूल गया।

हालदार साहब ने पानवाले जानना चाहा कि कैप्टेन चश्मेवाला नेताजी का साथी है या आजाद हिन्द फ़ौज का कोई भूतपूर्व सिपाही? पानवाले बोला कि वह लंगड़ा क्या फ़ौज में जाएगा, वह पागल है इसलिए ऐसा करता है। हालदार साहब को एक  देशभक्त का मजाक बनते देखना अच्छा नही लगा। कैप्टेन को देखकर उन्हें आश्चर्य हुआ चूँकि वह एक बूढ़ा मरियल-लंगड़ा सा आदमी था जिसके सिर पर गांधी टोपी तथा चश्मा था, उसके एक हाथ में एक छोटी-सी संदूकची और दूसरे में एक बांस में टंगे ढेरों चश्मे थे। वह उसका वास्तविक नाम जानना चाहते थे परन्तु पानवाले ने इससे ज्यादा बताने से मना कर दिया।

दो साल के भीतर हालदार साहब ने नेताजी की मूर्ति पर कई चश्मे लगते हुए देखे। एक बार जब हालदार साहब कस्बे से गुजरे तो मूर्ति पर कोई चश्मा नही था। पूछने पर पता चला की कैप्टेन मर गया, उन्हें बहुत दुःख हुआ। पंद्रह दिन बाद कस्बे से गुजरे तो सोचा की वहाँ नही रुकेंगे, पान भी नही खायेंगे, मूर्ति की ओर देखेंगे भी नहीं। परन्तु आदत से मजबूर हालदार साहब की नजर चौराहे पर आते ही आँखे मूर्ति की ओर उठ गयीं। वे जीप से उतरे और मूर्ति के सामने जाकर खड़े हो गए। मूर्ति की आँखों पर सरकंडे से बना हुआ छोटा सा चश्मा रखा था, जैसा बच्चे बना लेते हैं। यह देखकर हालदार साहब की आँखे नम हो गयीं।
