पांच भाई-बहनों में लेखिका सबसे छोटी थीं। काम उम्र में उनकी बड़ी बहन की शादी होने के कारण लेखिका के पास ज्यादा उनकी यादें नही थीं। लेखिका काली थीं तथा उनकी बड़ी बहन सुशीला के गोरी होने के कारण पिता हमेशा उनकी तुलना लेखिका से किया करते तथा उन्हें नीचा दिखाते। इस हीनता की भावना ने उनमें विशेष बनने की लगन उत्पन्न की परन्तु लेखकीय उपलब्धियाँ मिलने पर भी वह इससे उबार नही पाई। बड़ी बहन के विवाह तथा भाइयों के पढ़ने के लिए बाहर जाने पर पिता का ध्यान लेखिका पर केंद्रित हुआ। पिता ने उन्हें रसोई में समय ख़राब न कर देश दुनिया का हाल जानने के लिए प्रेरित किया। घर में जब कभी विभिन्न राजनितिक पार्टयों के जमावड़े होते और बहस होती तो लेखिका के पिता उन्हें उस बहस में  बैठाते जिससे उनके अंदर देशभक्ति की भावना जगी।

सन 1947 के मई महीने में कॉलेज ने लेखिका समेत दो-तीन छात्राओं का प्रवेश थर्ड ईयर में हुड़दंग की कारण निषिद्ध कर दिया परन्तु लेखिका और उनके मित्रों ने बाहर भी इतना हुड़दंग मचाया की आखिर उन्हें प्रवेश लेना ही पड़ा। यह ख़ुशी लेखिका को उतना खुश न कर पायी जितना आजादी की ख़ुशी ने दी। उन्होंने इसे शताब्दी की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि बताया है।
