💖 What Are A, An and The?

A, an and the are called articles. We put articles before naming words, also called nouns. Articles make our sentences clear. For example, we can say a kite, an ant and the moon. These little words may look easy, but children need practice to use them correctly.

Read aloud: I have a doll. I saw an owl. The doll is pink.

In the first sentence, we introduce a doll. In the last sentence, we know which doll is being discussed. This is why different articles are useful.

🍀 When Do We Use A?

Use a before one person, animal or thing when the next word begins with a consonant sound. For Class 1, start with familiar words such as a cat, a dog, a pen, a bag and a tree.

🐱 a cat   🎒 a bag   🖊️ a pen   🦋 a butterfly

Try saying each word aloud. Notice the sound at the beginning. Remember that a is used with a single countable thing, not with plural words such as cats or pens.

🍎 When Do We Use An?

Use an before a singular noun that begins with a vowel sound. Many beginner examples begin with the vowel letters a, e, i, o and u: an apple, an egg, an insect, an orange and an umbrella.

🍎 an apple   🥚 an egg   🦉 an owl   ☂️ an umbrella

The sound matters more than the first letter. For example, we say an hour because the letter h is silent, but a uniform because the first sound is “yoo”. Class 1 learners can begin with simple vowel examples and learn these exceptions later.

🌟 When Do We Use The?

Use the when talking about a particular person or thing that the reader or listener can identify. We also use the with familiar unique things, such as the sun and the moon.

☀️ the sun   🌙 the moon   📖 the book on my desk

Look at the difference: “I saw a puppy. The puppy was brown.” The first sentence introduces a puppy. The second sentence tells us more about that same puppy.

📚 A, An and The – Easy Rules Chart

ArticleWhen to useExample
ABefore a consonant sound; one nonspecific thinga rabbit, a toy
AnBefore a vowel sound; one nonspecific thingan ant, an orange
TheFor a particular or already known thingthe door, the sun

These examples help children recognise the patterns, but listening to the beginning sound is the most reliable rule for choosing between a and an.

✏️ Worked Examples with Answers

Example 1: I have ___ kite.

Answer: a. The word kite begins with a consonant sound. So we write: I have a kite.

Example 3: Please open ___ window. (We know which window.)

Encourage children to read each sentence twice: first with the blank, then with the completed article. Reading aloud helps them notice natural English word patterns.

🚫 Common Article Mistakes Children Make

A common mistake is writing a apple instead of an apple. Another is using an before every word beginning with the letter u. The correct choice depends on sound: an umbrella but a uniform. Children may also use the when introducing a new object even though the listener does not yet know which one is meant.

A helpful classroom activity is to show a picture of an object, ask the child to name it, and then ask them to choose an article. For the, use two pictures or point to a specific item: “Give me the red pencil.” The visual context makes the meaning clear.

👩‍🏫 How Parents and Teachers Can Use This Worksheet

Begin with five simple examples of a and an. Ask children to speak the full phrase rather than only the article. Next, introduce the with a specific toy or book. Let children attempt the 20-question online quiz independently, but help them read unfamiliar words. After the results appear, discuss the explanation for each incorrect answer.

The printable worksheet can be used as handwriting practice, homework or a quick revision activity. For a second attempt, encourage learners to say the complete sentence aloud before clicking an option. Short, repeated practice is often more effective than memorising a long rule in one sitting.
