Sight words worksheets for LKG help children practise recognising familiar words and using them in short phrases and sentences. This page combines printable practice with a sight words online quiz, word games and thinking activities. Begin with a few useful words such as I, a, my, in and on, then revisit them in meaningful examples before adding more.
Lower Kindergarten is commonly known as LKG, Junior KG or JR KG in India. Families outside India may look for kindergarten sight word worksheets or beginner reading activities. School stages and reading expectations vary, so choose tasks according to the child’s letter knowledge and experience rather than expecting every child to work through the same list at the same pace.
A sight word is a word a reader recognises automatically. High-frequency words are words that appear often in text; the two terms are related but do not mean exactly the same thing. Some common words follow spelling patterns children can sound out. Others contain parts that need extra explanation. Support recognition by noticing letters, connecting them with sounds already taught and reading the whole word in context.
For a new word, say it clearly, point to each letter and discuss the parts the child knows. Explain an unfamiliar spelling gently instead of asking the child to remember the word only as a picture. Show it again in a short phrase, then ask the child to find the same word among a few cards. Similar-looking words such as my and me need careful attention to every letter.
Meaning matters too. Demonstrate in with a toy inside a bag and on with a toy resting on a surface. Show into by moving the toy from outside to inside. Read short sentences and invite the child to act them out. Pictures can support vocabulary and understanding, while the written words remain the information children inspect when they read.
The twenty-question sight words quiz includes five easy, seven average and eight thinking questions. Children recognise words, complete clear sentences, compare letter order and reason about simple meanings. An adult can read instructions and explain unfamiliar vocabulary. The next question appears after an answer is selected; numbered question buttons and Previous or Next allow review before submitting.
The ten online games and activities give children different ways to practise. Word-ticket matching develops careful comparison, memory encourages repeated reading and sentence building connects word order with meaning. Sorting by letter count encourages observation. Sentence repair, two-clue puzzles and word detective tasks ask children to explain why a choice works. The mini book presents one sentence at a time with its response control nearby.
Use short, enjoyable practice sessions and revisit known words in shared reading. Keep a small set of word cards and celebrate a child noticing a familiar word in a real book. Expand towards simple decodable sentences alongside the phonics taught at school. There is no need to rush through a large word list or turn every session into a timed test; the goal is accurate reading, understanding and growing confidence.
💬 Sight Words Worksheets FAQs
😊 What are sight words?
Sight words are words a reader recognises automatically. Repeated accurate reading and attention to letters and sounds help a word become familiar.
😊 Which sight words should an LKG child learn first?
Start with a small useful set chosen with the teacher, such as I, a, my, in and on. Introduce more words as the child becomes comfortable recognising and using the first set.
😊 Are sight words and high-frequency words the same?
Not exactly. High-frequency words occur often in text; sight words are words a reader recognises automatically. A frequent word may still be unfamiliar to a beginner.
😊 Should children learn sight words or phonics first?
Use word practice alongside the phonics being taught. Help children sound out regular parts and explain unfamiliar spelling parts, then read the word in a short sentence.
😊 How many sight words should a Junior KG child know?
There is no single target that fits every school and child. Follow the classroom programme and look for accurate recognition and understanding rather than racing towards a fixed total.
😊 How can I teach sight words at home?
Introduce a few cards, read them together, notice their letters and use them in short sentences. Revisit through matching, memory and shared book reading.
😊 What is the difference between in, on and into?
In describes being inside; on can describe resting on a surface; into can describe movement to the inside. Demonstrate with a toy and a box.
😊 Why does my child confuse similar words?
Beginners may focus on the first letter or general shape. Compare every letter in words such as my and me, then read each word in a meaningful phrase.
😊 Should I use Dolch or Fry sight word lists for LKG?
These are widely used lists of common words, but they are not a universal LKG requirement. Follow the teacher’s sequence and select manageable words suited to the child’s reading skills.
😊 Which sight word activities develop thinking?
Build and repair sentences, sort cards by letter count, solve two-clue puzzles and explain why a word fits a sentence. Ask for a reason and allow the child to revise a choice.
