What Is Hindi Varnamala?
Hindi Varnamala is the organised collection of letters used to represent Hindi sounds. Hindi is written in the Devanagari script. At the beginning stage, children learn to recognise the letters, pronounce them and connect them with familiar words.
स्वर — Swar: Vowel letters, such as अ, आ, इ and ई.
व्यंजन — Vyanjan: Consonant letters, such as क, ख, ग and घ.
Practise recognition as well as recitation. A child who can say a sequence from memory may still need help identifying an individual letter when it appears in a different order.
Introducing Hindi Swar
Introduce the vowel letters gradually. Point to each letter, pronounce it clearly and connect it with a word your child understands. Follow the sequence and examples used by your child’s teacher.
Basic swar sequence:
अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ
अ से अनार, आ से आम, इ से इमली, ई से ईख।
Many beginner charts also place अं and अः after the vowel sequence. Introduce them separately: अं contains the अनुस्वार sign, and अः contains the विसर्ग sign. School charts may present these categories differently, so avoid teaching a fixed total without explaining what is being counted.
Introducing Hindi Vyanjan
Teach consonant letters in manageable groups. Read them aloud, point to their shapes and show familiar example words. Children do not need to master the entire sequence in one sitting.
क, ख, ग, घ, ङ
च, छ, ज, झ, ञ
क से कमल, ख से खरगोश, ग से गमला, च से चम्मच।
Show letters in a mixed order and ask your child to identify them. Later, introduce common combined forms such as क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ according to the school’s learning sequence. Explain that these are संयुक्ताक्षर, formed by combining consonants.
A Look, Say and Write Practice Routine
Show one clear letter and ask your child to look closely at its shape. Say the letter together, then model how to write it. Let your child copy it carefully and compare their attempt with the example.
When tracing guides are available, use them briefly before moving to independent writing. Encourage children to notice curves, lines and the top line where it belongs. Focus on readable letter formation rather than filling a whole page quickly.
Finish by asking your child to find the same letter among a few alternatives. This combines writing with recognition and helps you check that they understand which letter they have practised.

Helping Children Who Confuse Letters
If your child confuses two letters, place them side by side and discuss the differences in their shapes. Model each letter separately, then ask your child to find the one you name. Give feedback on one feature at a time.
Use familiar spoken words to support recognition. If a child does not know the word shown beside a letter, explain its meaning first. Keep sessions short, revisit previously learned letters and introduce new letters at a comfortable pace.
