Important Concepts Covered
Heating Effect of Electric Current
When electric current passes through a resistance, electrical energy is converted into heat. According to Joule’s law, the heat produced depends on the square of the current, the resistance and the time for which current flows. This effect is used in heaters, irons, toasters, electric kettles and fuses.
Electric Power and Electrical Energy
Electric power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed or converted. Its SI unit is watt. Commercial electrical energy is measured in kilowatt-hour. Students practise selecting the correct formula, converting power into kilowatts and calculating energy consumption.
Magnetic Effect of Electric Current
A current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it. The direction of the field around a straight conductor can be determined by the right-hand thumb rule. The magnetic field becomes stronger when current increases or when the observation point moves closer to the conductor.
Electromagnet
An electromagnet is produced by passing current through a coil wound around a soft iron core. Its strength can be increased by increasing the current, increasing the number of turns or using a suitable magnetic core. Electromagnets are used in electric bells, relays, cranes and several electrical devices.
Electric Motor
An electric motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. A current-carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a force and rotates. Fleming’s left-hand rule helps determine the direction of force. The split-ring commutator reverses current after every half rotation.
Electromagnetic Induction and Generator
Electromagnetic induction is the production of electric current due to a changing magnetic field. An electric generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Fleming’s right-hand rule is used to determine the direction of induced current.
How to Solve Electrical Numericals
- Write all the quantities given in the question.
- Convert power into watts or kilowatts as required.
- Convert time into seconds or hours according to the formula.
- Select the correct formula for power, energy or heating.
