Chapter 5Heat Solutions

Explore latent heat, specific heat capacity, anomalous behaviour of water, regelation, humidity and dew point through clear textbook solutions. The solutions PDF includes a mind map on its final page.

Chapter 5 study guide: Read the worked explanations, practise the textbook questions independently and use the final-page mind map for revision.

What Is Covered in Heat?

Use these chapter solutions to understand the reasoning behind important answers. The following ideas form the foundation of this chapter.

Q

Heat and temperature

Separate energy transferred from the temperature used to describe how hot an object is.

°C

Changes of state

Explain why melting and boiling can occur without a rise in temperature.

H₂O

Water and humidity

Connect anomalous expansion, dew point and condensation with everyday observations.

Key Heat Concepts

Q = mcΔT: heat for a temperature change
Q = mL: heat needed for a change of state

Latent heat

During melting or boiling, energy changes the state of matter while its temperature remains constant.

Anomalous behaviour of water

Water reaches its highest density near 4°C. This helps explain why ice forms at the surface of a lake.

Specific heat capacity and dew point

Compare how substances warm up, then relate air temperature and water vapour to condensation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Select a question to view a brief explanation and example.

Why does ice at 0°C cool a drink more than water at 0°C?
Ice absorbs latent heat from the drink while melting. Water at 0°C has already melted. That extra heat transfer is why ice cubes cool lemonade so well.
Why does temperature remain constant while ice melts?
The supplied energy is used to change ice into water. After the ice has melted completely, further heating can raise the temperature of the water.
Why do lakes freeze at the surface first?
Water is densest at about 4°C. Colder water stays near the top and freezes there; the ice helps insulate the liquid water beneath it.
What is dew point?
Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated and water vapour begins to condense. Droplets forming on the outside of a cold bottle are a familiar example.
What is specific heat capacity?
It is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1°C. Water has a high specific heat capacity, so it warms and cools relatively slowly.
Where is the mind map?
The chapter mind map is on the last page of the solutions PDF. Use it after reading the answers to recall how the concepts are connected.
