यह लेख वैज्ञानिक चन्द्रशेखर वेंकट रामन की संघर्षमय जीवन यात्रा तथा उनकी उपलब्धियों की जानकारी बखूबी कराता है। रामन ग्यारह साल की उम्र में मैट्रिक, विशेष योग्यता की साथ इंटरमीडिएट, भौतिकी और अंग्रेज़ी में स्वर्ण पदक के साथ बी. ए. और प्रथम श्रेणी में एम. ए. करके मात्र अठारह साल की उम्र में कोलकाता में भारत सरकार के फाइंनेस डिपार्टमेंट में सहायक जनरल एकाउटेंट नियुक्त कर लिए गए थे। इनकी प्रतिभा से इनके अध्यापक तक अभिभूत थे। इस दौरान वे बहूबाज़ार स्थित प्रयोगशाला में कामचलाऊ उपकरणों का इस्तेमाल करके शोध कार्य करते थे।

फिर उन्होंने अनेक भारतीय वाद्ययंत्रों का अध्ययन किया और वैज्ञानिक सिद्धांतों के आधार पर पश्चिम देशों की इस भ्रांति को तोड़ने का प्रयास किया कि भारतीय वाद्ययंत्र विदेशी वाद्यों की तुलना में घटिया हैं। बाद में वे सरकारी नौकरी छोड़कर कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर के पद को स्वीकार किया । यहां वे अपना सारा समय अध्ययन, अध्यापन और शोध में बिताने लगे। सन 1921 में जब रामन समुद्री यात्रा पर थे तो समुद्र के नीले रंग को देखकर उसके वज़ह का सवाल हिलोरें मारने लगा। उन्होंने इस दिशा में आगे प्रयोग किए तथा इसका परिणाम ‘रामन प्रभाव’ की खोज के रूप में सामने लाया। रामन की खोज की वजह से पदार्थों मे अणुओं और परमाणुओं की आंतरिक संरचना का अध्ययन सहज हो गया।
