📖 Read the ee and oo learning guide
This ee and oo worksheet for UKG introduces two vowel spellings through familiar words and short phonics tasks. UKG is also called Senior KG or SR KG. Children practise ee words such as see, bee, feet and seed, and oo words such as moon, boot, food and pool.
Start with the sound-spelling relationship rather than two separate letter names. In see, ee represents the long e sound. In moon, oo represents /uː/, the sound modelled in moon and boot. This is not the long o sound heard in go. The two letters work together to represent one vowel sound in these examples.
Use blending to read the whole word. In feet, the written parts f, ee and t represent three sounds. Moon can be segmented as m, oo and n. Give the vowel pair one sound box or one tile during early practice so children do not automatically count each written letter as a separate phoneme.
Keep letters and sounds distinct. Feet has four letters but three phonemes, because ee represents one sound. Moon also has four letters and three phonemes. When counting sounds, an adult can say the word naturally, segment it and move one counter for each phoneme before connecting the sounds with written spellings.
Not every oo word has the moon vowel. Book and foot usually contain a different oo sound, /ʊ/. Compare moon with book using the spoken models taught in class. Some words vary across English accents, so begin with clear examples and avoid teaching that oo always has only one pronunciation.
Word sorting can check two different things: spelling and sound. A spelling basket for oo can contain both moon and book because both contain those letters. A sound basket for oo as in moon needs a more specific label. The online comparison activity makes this distinction explicit instead of treating matching spellings as proof of matching sounds.
Movable tiles and word changes encourage careful reading. Build seed, change its first letter to f and read feed. Build moon, change m to n and read noon. Ask children to point to the part that changed and the vowel pair that stayed the same. Explain unfamiliar vocabulary before expecting an independent answer.
The twenty-question online quiz and ten interactive ee and oo phonics games complement the printable worksheet for SR KG. Children explore word groups, match cards, build sound-spelling sequences, repair vowel pairs and read a short sentence. An adult can model pronunciation and check spoken blending. Follow the classroom phonics sequence and revisit familiar words before adding other long-vowel spellings.
