Subtraction worksheets for UKG including story sums help children connect taking away with the quantity that remains. UKG is also called Senior KG or SR KG. These subtraction activities for SR KG use numbers up to ten, with pictures, objects and short situations that children can act out before recording a number sentence.
Begin with a small collection of counters. Put out five, move two aside and count the three still in the original group. Say five take away two leaves three. Keep the starting collection clear so children understand that the removed counters were part of the original five, rather than an extra group.
Introduce the minus sign alongside the action. In 5 − 2 = 3, five is the starting quantity, two is taken away and three is left. The equals sign means that both sides have the same value. Read the whole number sentence and ask the child to point to each part of the model.
Picture subtraction worksheets for kindergarten make the action visible. Children can cross out the objects being removed, then count only those that remain. Crossed-out pictures still belong to the starting collection, but they are no longer included in the remaining quantity. Recounting every picture after crossing out is a useful mistake to discuss together.
Read subtraction story sums for UKG aloud when needed. Ask what there is at first, what happens and what the question asks. For example, seven birds sit on a branch and three fly away. Model seven birds, move three away and count four left on the branch. Understanding the situation is more useful than relying only on words such as left or fewer.
Include zero in both roles. Taking away zero leaves the starting quantity unchanged: 6 − 0 = 6. Taking away the whole collection leaves none: 6 − 6 = 0. Use an empty space or empty basket to show that zero is a quantity, rather than a missing answer.
A number path introduces counting back. For 8 − 3, start at eight and make three backward jumps, landing on seven, six and five. Count the jumps carefully; the starting number is not the first jump. Children can return to objects whenever the path feels difficult.
The twenty-question online subtraction quiz and ten interactive games provide varied practice alongside the printable worksheet. Children remove counters, deliver matching answers, repair labels, sort remainders and model story sums. Encourage them to explain what was taken away and what remains. Move towards independent written subtraction when the connection between the model and number sentence is secure.
💬 UKG Subtraction Worksheet FAQs
😊 How do I teach subtraction to a UKG child?
Start with a small group of real objects. Move some away, count those left and connect the action with a subtraction sentence.
😊 What are subtraction story sums?
They are short situations involving quantities, such as birds flying away or apples being eaten. Children model the action and find the quantity asked for.
😊 How do children subtract using pictures?
Cross out the pictures being taken away, then count only the pictures that remain.
😊 How can I help my child understand subtraction word problems?
Read the story aloud. Ask what is there at first, what happens and what must be found. Use counters to act it out.
😊 What does the minus sign mean?
The minus sign, −, means subtract. In a take-away problem, it shows how many objects to remove from the starting group.
😊 What happens when we subtract zero?
The quantity stays the same. For example, 7 − 0 = 7 because nothing is taken away.
😊 What happens when we subtract a number from itself?
The answer is zero. If all five counters are removed from a group of five, none remain: 5 − 5 = 0.
😊 How do I teach counting back for subtraction?
Start at the first number and make one backward jump for each amount taken away. For 6 − 2, the two landings are five and four.
😊 Why does my child count the crossed-out pictures too?
The child may still be counting the starting collection. Separate the removed objects clearly and ask how many are still in the original group.
