Common or Proper Sorting

Learn: Separate general names from particular names.

  1. Select or drag a word card.
  2. Place it in Common noun or Proper noun.

Learning and activity notes

Proper names identify particular named examples. A common noun can also refer to a particular thing in a sentence: “the dog” still contains the common noun dog.

A capital letter has several uses. Sentence beginnings and the pronoun I need capitals, but that does not turn every capitalised word into a proper noun.

Story-town names, badges and animal names are invented for learning. Creative writing and drawings are reviewed by an adult. Copy useful work into a notebook before leaving or resetting.

Parent and Teacher Tips
  • Begin with meaningful pairs such as city and Mumbai or child and Meera.
  • Ask whether the word is a general name or a particular name.
  • Explain why a sentence-start capital does not change a common noun’s type.
  • Use invented names for creative badges, maps and stories.
  • Review open writing for meaning, noun use and capitals rather than expecting one fixed answer.
Common and Proper Nouns Class 2 Worksheet Learning Guide

What Is a Common Noun?

A common noun is a general name, such as child, city, animal, river or school. It can name a kind of person, place or thing. In “the dog near the gate”, dog remains a common noun even though the sentence refers to a particular dog.

What Is a Proper Noun?

A proper noun is a particular name, such as Anaya, Mumbai, India or Ganga. The name of a day, month or language also begins with a capital letter in English.

This common and proper nouns worksheet for Class 2 with online quiz and online activities connects meaning with capital letters through pictures, matching and sentence practice.

Capital Letters Need Careful Thinking

Proper names begin with capitals. Common nouns usually use lowercase letters unless another writing rule requires a capital. In “Birds fly”, Birds is common even though it begins the sentence.

The pronoun I is capitalised, but it is not a proper noun. A sign written in all capitals also does not change a general word such as CITY into a particular city’s name.

Names Can Contain More Than One Word

Taj Mahal is one particular monument’s name. Maple School is an invented school name used in these activities. Consider the whole name rather than treating every word in a name as a separate named example.

Learn Through Reading and Writing

Begin with general-name and special-name pairs. Continue with the online quiz, matching game and story-town activity. Then use the capital-letter editor, photo captions and mini postcard to practise both noun types in sentences.

Common and Proper Nouns Class 2 Worksheet FAQs

What is the difference between common and proper nouns?

A common noun is a general name, such as city. A proper noun is a particular name, such as Mumbai.

What are easy common and proper noun pairs?

Examples include city and Pune, country and India, child and Meera, and day and Tuesday.

Do proper nouns begin with capital letters?

Yes. In these introductory English examples, write names such as Riya, India and Monday with capital letters.

Does a common noun become proper at the start of a sentence?

No. In “Birds fly”, Birds begins with a capital because it starts the sentence. It remains a common noun.

Are days and months proper nouns?

The particular names of days and months, such as Friday and July, are proper names. The general words day and month are common nouns.

Can an animal have a proper name?

Yes. Cat is a common noun, while Milo can be the particular name given to a cat. Milo is an invented animal name in this lesson.

Are mango and tiger proper nouns?

As general fruit and animal names, mango and tiger are common nouns. A word could be used as an explicitly given character or business name, but a capital letter alone does not establish that.

Can a proper name contain more than one word?

Yes. Taj Mahal is a particular monument’s name. The fictional Maple School is another example of a name containing two words.

Does the dog become a proper noun when we mean one particular dog?

No. Dog remains a common noun in “the dog near the gate”. A given name, such as Rex, is a proper name.

Which activities help children learn both noun types?

Matching general and special names, sorting nouns, editing capitals, naming story places and writing photo captions provide varied practice.
