Free This and That Worksheet for UKG
This free this and that worksheet introduces simple pointing words through clear near-and-far examples. UKG, also called SR KG or Senior KG, children can look at one object and choose a sentence from the speaker’s viewpoint. Begin with familiar vocabulary and show who is speaking before checking an answer. An adult can read the instructions while the child points or moves picture cards.
This for Near and That for Far
For these introductory distance activities, use this for one object near the speaker and that for one object farther away. The important reference is the speaker, not the viewer’s screen or the left side of a picture. An object can be on either side and still be near. Clear distance labels support learners while they develop the idea.
This and That Sentences for Kindergarten
Model complete sentences such as This is a shell and That is a boat. Both use is because each example refers to one object. Name the object before choosing the pointing word. If children need more vocabulary practice, revisit the naming words worksheet for UKG and then return to the distance task.
This and That Worksheet with Pictures
Pictures should show both the speaker and the intended object. A large object is not automatically near, and a small object is not automatically far. Colour does not determine the pointing word either. These games use labelled distance zones and a speaker marker, so the child can compare position instead of guessing from object size.
Changing Distance and the Speaker’s Viewpoint
Move the same toy from beside the speaker to a clearly distant position. Discuss how this can change to that while the object’s name stays the same. Later, keep the object still and change the speaker’s position. The viewpoint activity demonstrates why two speakers can describe the same object differently without changing its identity.

Correct quiz answers appear after submission; the activities provide feedback during play.
This That These and Those as a Later Step

💬 This and That Worksheet FAQs
😊 What is the difference between this and that?
In these basic distance examples, this points to one object near the speaker and that points to one object farther away.
😊 How do I teach this and that to a UKG child?
Place one toy beside the speaker and another farther away. Model both sentences, then let the child move a toy and describe its position.
😊 Does this mean left and that mean right?
No. Near and far depend on the speaker’s position. Either side of a picture can show a nearby or distant object.
😊 Whose position matters when choosing this or that?
The speaker’s position is the reference in these activities. Identify who is speaking before comparing the distance.
😊 Do we use is or are with this and that?
Use is in these singular example sentences: This is a shell and That is a boat. Plural forms such as these and those use are in similar sentences.
😊 What are these and those?
These points to more than one nearby item and those to more than one farther-away item in basic distance examples. They are a later extension of this and that.
😊 Can the same object change from this to that?
Yes. Moving the object farther from the speaker, or changing the speaker’s position, can change the pointing word.

Not reliably. Look for the speaker and the stated distance. Object size or colour alone does not determine the answer.

No. English also uses these words to refer to ideas, time and shared context. This beginner page focuses on clear physical-distance examples.
