🌈 Compare quantities before symbols
A greater than or less than worksheet helps UKG and SR KG children compare two numbers and explain which has more, which has fewer or whether both are equal. Begin with small groups of familiar objects. Count each group or pair the objects one to one before introducing the written signs. This page combines printable practice with an online quiz, animated lessons and interactive comparing numbers games.
🐊 Understand greater than and less than
The greater than sign is > and the less than sign is <. The open side faces the greater number; the pointed end faces the smaller number. Read the whole statement from left to right: 6 > 2 means “six is greater than two”, while 2 < 6 means “two is less than six”. A crocodile picture can help children remember the shape, but connect it with actual quantities and comparison words.
🟰 Equal means the same amount
Greater than less than or equal to worksheets also introduce =. Two groups are equal when they contain the same number of objects, even if the objects have different colours, sizes or spacing. Spread out a group, count it again and discuss why its total stays the same. Revisit counting numbers 1 to 10 worksheets for UKG to strengthen the link between numerals and quantities.
🔢 Use number order as evidence
On a number line that increases to the right, a whole number farther right has the greater value. Start with a familiar range, then extend to teen numbers when ready. In 14 and 18, both numbers have one ten, so compare the four ones with the eight ones. Continue with 11 to 20 counting worksheets for SR KG. The online tasks provide additional examples rather than reproducing the PDF.
🧩 Explain and repair comparisons
A comparing numbers worksheet becomes more useful when children explain a choice. Ask “How do you know?” after they match counters or build a true statement. Swapping the two numbers changes > to <, or < to >, while equal numbers still use =. Explore quantity separately from physical size with size and weight comparison activities. A large printed numeral does not have a greater value just because it looks bigger.

💬 Greater Than and Less Than Worksheet FAQs
What do greater than and less than mean?
Greater than means a number has a larger value. Less than means it has a smaller value. Compare quantities first, then connect the words with the symbols.
Which way does the greater than or less than sign face?
The open side faces the greater number and the pointed end faces the smaller number. Read the statement from left to right.
How do I teach greater than and less than to a UKG child?
Start with two small groups of objects. Count them or match objects in pairs, describe more, fewer or the same, and then introduce the written comparison.
What does the equal sign mean?
The equal sign means the amounts or values on both sides are the same. It does not mean that an answer must always come next.
Does a longer row always have more objects?
No. Spacing can make a row longer without changing its total. Count or pair the objects to compare the actual quantities.
How can I help a child who mixes up the signs?
Use two clear quantities and point out the open side and pointed end. Read the full comparison aloud, then swap the numbers and discuss the new sign.
Can zero be used in a comparison worksheet?
Yes. An empty group represents zero. Compare it with a group containing objects, and use two empty groups to explore 0 = 0.
When should children compare two-digit numbers?
Extend the range when children recognise the numbers and can connect them with quantities. Use tens and ones models and provide adult support as needed.
What games help children learn number comparison?
Build counter groups, match objects one to one, sort number cards around a target, move on a number line and create true comparisons with number tiles.
Where can I download this comparison worksheet?
Use the existing download option on this worksheet page. The quiz, animated lessons and activities provide additional online practice.
