🌈 Understand number neighbours
Before after and between numbers worksheets help SR KG children connect number recognition with counting order. The number just before is one less, and the number just after is one more. In 8, 9, 10, nine is between eight and ten. Begin with a familiar range and use counters or a labelled number track to support each comparison.
⬅️ Find the number just before
A before number worksheet asks children to count back one step. For example, seventeen comes just before eighteen. On a number line that increases to the right, move one step left to find the previous whole number. Practise with short sequences before removing the visual support. Revisit counting numbers 1 to 10 when helpful.
➡️ Find the number just after
An after number worksheet focuses on counting forward one step. The number just after nineteen is twenty, so include a few examples that cross a ten boundary when the child is ready. Avoid asking children to restart at one every time. Continue from the stated number and connect the spoken answer with its written numeral. Explore SR KG counting 11 to 20 worksheets for more practice.
🏡 Find numbers between two endpoints
A between numbers worksheet may show 14, blank, 16, where fifteen is the only missing whole number. Wider gaps can contain several numbers: sixteen, seventeen and eighteen all lie strictly between fifteen and nineteen. Read whether the task asks for one missing neighbour or every whole number in a range. The endpoints themselves are not included when the task says strictly between.
🧩 Build and repair number order
Number sequencing activities help children explain their choices. Arrange movable cards, repair a missing house number or build a three-number strip around a chosen centre. Distinguish counting in ones from SR KG skip counting activities: a jump of two passes over a number, while the immediate neighbour is only one step away. Try connect the dots number worksheets to follow labels in order.

💬 Before After and Between Numbers FAQs
What are before, after and between numbers?
They describe number order. In 6, 7, 8, six is just before seven, eight is just after seven, and seven is between six and eight.
How do I teach before and after numbers to an SR KG child?
Use a short labelled number line and movable cards. Find the given number, move back one for just before and forward one for just after.
Does before mean one less?
The number just before a whole number in counting order is one less. Use the word just to make the immediate-neighbour meaning clear.
How do children find the number after 19?
Count forward one step from nineteen to twenty. Show 18, 19, 20 and 21 together so the change across the ten boundary is visible.
How do I teach the number between two numbers?
Start with endpoints that differ by two, such as 11 and 13. Count the sequence and identify twelve in the gap.
Can more than one whole number be between two numbers?
Yes. For example, 5, 6 and 7 are all strictly between 4 and 8. Read whether the task asks for one missing number or all numbers in a range.
What is the whole number just before 1?
Zero comes just before one in the whole-number sequence. Use an empty set to connect the numeral 0 with its quantity.
What helps children who confuse before and after?
Practise one direction at a time with a clear counting track. Say count back one or count on one, then connect these actions with before and after.
What activities practise number neighbours?
Arrange cards, repair number strips, move a token on a number line, sort clue cards and build a three-number strip around a chosen centre.
