Observation tips and model notes

Observe plants and animals without disturbing or harming them. Ask an adult before handling an object. Do not taste unknown things or touch sharp, dirty or unsafe items.

Drawings and written observations are reviewed by an adult. The toy slider represents position; it is not a physics simulation. The park builder is a simple design model, not a complete habitat.

Work remains on this page while it stays open. Copy useful observations into a notebook before leaving or resetting a task.

  • Invite spoken, written or drawn explanations and review them together.
Things Around Us Class 2 Worksheet Learning Guide

What Are Things Around Us?

The things around us include plants, animals, air, water, rocks, buildings, furniture and many everyday objects. This Things Around Us Class 2 worksheet page helps children observe their surroundings and group familiar examples.

Living and Non-Living Things for Class 2

People, other animals and plants are living things. Living things carry out life processes such as using energy, growing and responding to their surroundings. A tree remains living even though it does not walk, and a sleeping cat remains alive.

A toy car, spoon and bench are non-living. A push can move a toy without making it alive. A balloon can become larger when filled with air, but that is not the biological growth of a living thing.

Natural and Human-Made Things

Natural things occur in nature. A bird is natural and living; a rock or river is natural and non-living. People make objects such as chairs, bottles and bicycles.

The finished object and its material need careful distinction. Wood comes from trees, but people shape it into a wooden bench. The bench is a human-made non-living object.

Observe Before You Decide

A photograph can show visible features such as leaves, wheels or a container. One photograph usually cannot establish an exact age, future height or growth over time. For stronger evidence, compare observations made on different days.

A viable seed contains a living young plant. Some seeds remain inactive until conditions are suitable. Do not label a seed non-living simply because it has not sprouted in one afternoon.

Things Around Us Class 2 Worksheet FAQs

What are things around us?

They include plants, animals, air, water, rocks and objects such as chairs, books and vehicles.

What are living and non-living things?

Living things carry out life processes. Plants and animals are living. A stone, spoon and toy car are non-living.

What are five examples of living things?

A child, cat, bird, mango tree and bean plant are living things.

What are five examples of non-living things?

A rock, steel spoon, glass bottle, bench and bicycle are non-living things.

Why are plants living if they do not walk?

Plants grow, use energy, exchange gases and respond to their surroundings. Walking from place to place is not a requirement for life.

Is everything that moves living?

No. A push can move a toy, wind can move a leaf and a motor can move a robot. Movement alone is not enough evidence of life.

Are all natural things living?

No. A tree is natural and living, while water, air and rocks are natural and non-living.

Is a wooden chair natural or human-made?

The finished chair is human-made. Its wood came from a tree, but people shaped and assembled the chair. The chair is non-living.

Is a seed a living thing?

A viable seed contains a living young plant. It may remain inactive until suitable conditions allow germination. Not every seed is viable.

What is a useful observation activity for Class 2?

Observe the same healthy plant over several days. Record dates, visible changes and measurements while continuing to care for it.

Can a photograph prove that something has grown?

A single photograph shows one moment. Comparing dated photographs or measurements of the same organism provides better evidence of growth.

How do I download the worksheet and see quiz answers?
