What is addition?
Addition means putting numbers together to find a total. The numbers we add are called addends and the answer is called the sum. We use the plus sign (+) for addition. Words such as “in all”, “altogether” and “total” tell us to add.
Place value of a 3 digit number
A 3 digit number has a hundreds place, a tens place and a ones place. In 358 the digit 3 is 3 hundreds, the digit 5 is 5 tens and the digit 8 is 8 ones. So 358 = 300 + 50 + 8. Knowing place value makes 3 digit addition much easier.
| Number | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | Expanded form |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 358 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 300 + 50 + 8 |
| 204 | 2 | 0 | 4 | 200 + 0 + 4 |
| 760 | 7 | 6 | 0 | 700 + 60 + 0 |
3 digit addition without regrouping
When the digits in every place add to 9 or less, no regrouping is needed. Add the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds. For example, 245 + 132: ones 5 + 2 = 7, tens 4 + 3 = 7 and hundreds 2 + 1 = 3. The sum is 377.
What is regrouping in addition?
Regrouping means making a new group when a place has 10 or more. 10 ones make 1 ten and 10 tens make 1 hundred. Regrouping is also called carrying. We write the extra ones or tens in the answer and carry the new ten or hundred to the next place on the left.
How to add 3 digit numbers with regrouping
- Write the numbers one below the other. Line up the ones, the tens and the hundreds.
- Add the ones. If the total is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 to the tens column.
- Add the tens, plus any carried 1. If the total is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 to the hundreds column.
- Add the hundreds, plus any carried 1. Write the total.
- Read your answer and check that it makes sense.
Regrouping in the ones place
Take 326 + 247. The ones are 6 + 7 = 13. That is 1 ten and 3 ones. Write 3 in the ones place and carry 1 to the tens column. Tens: 2 + 4 + 1 = 7. Hundreds: 3 + 2 = 5. The sum is 573.
Regrouping in the tens place
Take 152 + 183. The ones are 2 + 3 = 5, so there is no regrouping. The tens are 5 + 8 = 13. Write 3 in the tens place and carry 1 to the hundreds column. Hundreds: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. The sum is 335.
Regrouping in both the ones and the tens place
Take 467 + 285. Ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Write 2 and carry 1. Tens: 6 + 8 + 1 = 15. Write 5 and carry 1. Hundreds: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. The sum is 752. Many Class 3 addition worksheets practise this kind of sum, where regrouping happens twice.
Adding with a zero in the tens place
Take 205 + 118. Ones: 5 + 8 = 13. Write 3 and carry 1. Tens: 0 + 1 + 1 = 2. Hundreds: 2 + 1 = 3. The sum is 323. The carried 1 is easy to forget when the tens digit is 0, so always add it.
Expanded method for addition
You can also add by breaking numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. For 358 + 276, add the hundreds: 300 + 200 = 500. Add the tens: 50 + 70 = 120. Add the ones: 8 + 6 = 14. Then add the parts: 500 + 120 + 14 = 634. This method shows why we regroup.
3 digit addition word problems
An addition word problem is a short story with numbers. Read the story and look for clue words such as “in all” or “altogether”. Write the sum in columns, add from the ones and write the answer with its unit. For example, a shop sold 245 pens on Monday and 378 pens on Tuesday. 245 + 378 = 623, so the shop sold 623 pens in all.
Estimating and checking your answer
Before you add, round each number to the nearest hundred and add the rounded numbers. This gives an estimate. For 478 + 345, 500 + 300 = 800. The exact sum, 823, is close to the estimate, so the answer is sensible. You can also check an addition with subtraction: if 478 + 345 = 823, then 823 − 345 should be 478.
Solved examples
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Forgetting to add the carried digit | Write the carry above the next column and add it with the other digits. |
| Writing the whole total in one column, such as 13 in the ones place | Write only the ones digit and carry the tens digit. |
| Not lining up the ones, tens and hundreds | Write the numbers in columns with the ones under the ones. |
| Adding the hundreds first | Start with the ones. Carrying moves from right to left. |
| Carrying a digit that is too big, such as carrying 3 | The carry in 3 digit addition is almost always 1. |
Addition in daily life
We add 3 digit numbers when we find the total price of two items, the number of pages in two books or the number of students in two schools. Practising addition with real prices and counts makes the rules easier to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is regrouping in 3 digit addition?
Regrouping means making a new ten or a new hundred when the digits in a place add to 10 or more. 10 ones make 1 ten and 10 tens make 1 hundred.
Is carrying the same as regrouping?
Yes. Carrying is another name for regrouping in addition. We write the extra digits in the answer and carry the new ten or hundred to the next place.
How do I add 3 digit numbers with regrouping?
Write the numbers in columns. Add the ones first, then the tens, then the hundreds. If a column adds to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 to the next column on the left.
When do I regroup in the ones place?
Regroup in the ones place when the ones digits add to 10 or more. For example, 6 + 7 = 13, so write 3 in the ones place and carry 1 to the tens.
When do I regroup in the tens place?
Regroup in the tens place when the tens digits plus any carried digit add to 10 or more. For example, 6 + 8 + 1 = 15, so write 5 in the tens place and carry 1 to the hundreds.
What is 3 digit addition without regrouping?
It is addition where the digits in every place add to 9 or less, so nothing is carried. For example, 245 + 132 = 377.
What is column addition?
Column addition means writing the numbers one below the other with the ones, tens and hundreds lined up, then adding each column from right to left.
How do I check my addition answer?
Use subtraction. If 478 + 345 = 823, then 823 − 345 should give 478. You can also estimate by rounding each number to the nearest hundred.
How do I estimate a 3 digit sum?
Round each number to the nearest hundred and add. For 478 + 345, round to 500 and 300, so the estimate is 800. The exact answer should be close to this.
How do I solve an addition word problem?
Read the story and look for clue words such as in all or altogether. Write the numbers in columns, add from the ones and write the answer with its unit.
What are the common mistakes in addition with regrouping?
The most common mistakes are forgetting to add the carried digit, writing both digits of a total in one column and not lining up the places.
