What is Class 3 Maths Chapter 13 Time Goes On?

Chapter 13 of the NCERT Class 3 Maths book Maths Mela is called Time Goes On. Time passes all the time and we measure it in different units. A day is split into hours and minutes, days are joined into weeks and months, and months are joined into a year. The calendar tells us about dates and days and the clock tells us about the time of day.

Remember: 7 days make 1 week. 12 months make 1 year. 60 minutes make 1 hour. A date is written as day, month and year, so 2/5/2015 is 2 May 2015.

Reading a calendar

A calendar lists the days of a month under the names of the days of the week. The days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In July 2024 the 1st falls on a Monday, so Mondays are 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Each date in the same column is 7 more than the one above it.

Question on July 2024Answer
Sundays7, 14, 21 and 28, so 4 Sundays
Thursdays4, 11, 18 and 25
Three days after July 22July 25, a Thursday
School closes July 7 for 15 daysOpens on July 22

Months and the year

A year has 12 months: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December. January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days. April, June, September and November have 30 days. February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year, and it is the only month with fewer than 30 days. A year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year. 52 weeks make 364 days, so a year has 52 weeks and 1 day more. Hetal says there are 53 weeks in a year, but counting on a calendar shows 52 full weeks.

What is the same in every calendar? The names of the months and the days in a week. What changes? The day on which a date falls, such as the day of 1 July, and the dates of many festivals.

Dates, ages and a birth certificate

A birth certificate gives the date of birth, written as 02/05/2015, which means 2 May 2015. To find age, subtract the years. On 2 May 2025 Bincy is 2025 − 2015 = 10 years old. In 2030 she will be 15. Her eighth birthday was on 2 May 2023. On 2 August 2015 she was 3 months old. The certificate was made on 18 May 2015, which is 16 days after her birth because 18 − 2 = 16.

Age puzzles

Hetal is twice as old as her brother and also 10 years older. Try an age for the brother. If he is 8, Hetal would be 16, which is only 8 more. If he is 10, Hetal is 20, which is 10 more. So the brother is 10 and Hetal is 20. This is guess and check, a good way to solve a puzzle.

The analog clock

An analog clock has a short hour hand and a long minute hand. The numbers 1 to 12 show hours. Between two numbers there are 5 minutes, so there are 60 small marks and 60 minutes in 1 hour. When the minute hand is on 12 it is an o'clock time. When it is on 3 it is 15 minutes past, which is quarter past. When it is on 6 it is half past. When it is on 9 it is 45 minutes past, which is quarter to the next hour.

Minute hand onMinutesIn wordsDigits (hour 8)
1208 o'clock8:00
315Quarter past 88:15
630Half past 88:30
945Quarter to 98:45

Digital clock and sand clock

A digital clock shows the time in digits, such as 07:15. An analog clock shows it with hands. Both tell the same time. A sand clock measures time as sand falls from one bottle into another. You can make one with two small bottles and find out how long the sand takes by looking at a clock.

How long does it take?

Some events take months, such as changing from summer to winter or growing carrots. Some take weeks, such as completing a chapter in class or growing a radish. Some take days and some take hours, such as stitching a shirt. Others take minutes, such as brushing teeth or taking a shower. To find the minutes taken, look at the start time and the end time. Breakfast from 07:00 to 07:15 took 15 minutes.

Types of questions to practise

Questions on this chapter ask children to read a calendar, find a date after some days, name months, find age and birthdays, read and set a clock, write times in words and digits, and find the minutes between two times. The online quiz on this page mixes choice questions, true or false questions, picture questions and typed answers, and the practice sheet has 16 typed answers.
