What is a view?

A view is what you see when you look at an object from one place. The same object can look different when you look from the front, from above or from the side. A top view is what you see when you look down on an object from above. A front view is what you see when you stand in front of it. A side view is what you see when you stand at its side.

Remember: A view shows only the flat outline you can see. It does not show what is hidden behind.

Views of a block stack

Think of towers of blocks in a row. The front view shows the tallest tower in every column. The side view shows the tallest tower in every row. The top view shows one square for every tower, and it does not show how tall each tower is. A top view can also have a number on each square to show how many blocks are in that tower.

How to find the front view

Stand in front of the stack. Look at the columns from left to right. In each column, find the tallest tower. Draw that many squares one on top of the other. The front view of towers 1, 2 and 3 is a staircase of three columns.

How to find the top view

Look down from above. Colour one square for every place that has a tower. The height does not matter for the top view. A tower of 3 blocks and a tower of 1 block both make one square.

Left, right, front and back

When you walk around a stack you see it from four places: front, right, back and left. The back view is the front view turned round, so its columns run the other way. The left view is the right view turned round.

Counting blocks

Count the blocks tower by tower and add them. Do not forget blocks hidden behind a tall tower. For towers of 2, 3 and 1 blocks the total is 2 + 3 + 1 = 6 blocks.

Drawing a stack from its views

Use the front view for the height of each column. Use the side view to check the depth. Try a tower in each place and check both views match. There can be more than one stack with the same two views.

Word problems and higher order thinking

Read the question and picture the object. Decide which side you look from. Draw the outline you see. Higher order thinking questions ask you to guess a solid from its views, find the mistake in a drawing or compare the views of two stacks.

Solved examples

Example 1. The top view of a tin is a circle.
Example 2. The front view of a cone is a triangle.
Example 3. A ball looks like a circle from every side.
Example 4. Towers of 2, 1 and 3 blocks stand in a row. The front view is a staircase of columns 2, 1 and 3. The total is 2 + 1 + 3 = 6 blocks.
Example 5. Four towers stand in a 2 by 2 square. The top view has 4 squares.
Example 6. A solid is a circle from the top and a triangle from the front. It is a cone.
Example 7. A box is a rectangle from the top, front and side. It is a cuboid.
Example 8. A tower of 4 blocks has a front view of 4 squares one on top of the other.

Views in daily life

We use views when we read a map, which is a top view of a place, when we look at a house plan, when we pack boxes and when we draw a toy. Ask your child to look at a cup from the top, the front and the side and to say what shapes they see.
