Multiplication for Class 3: complete topic guide
What is multiplication?
Multiplication is a quick way to add the same number again and again. 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 is 3 groups of 4, so we write 3 × 4 = 12. The numbers being multiplied are called factors. The answer is called the product.
Equal groups and repeated addition
Multiplication works when every group has the same number of things. 5 bags with 3 sweets in each bag make 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 sweets, so 5 × 3 = 15. If the groups are not equal, such as bags with 2, 3 and 6 sweets, you cannot use multiplication.
Arrays
An array arranges objects in equal rows and columns. An array with 3 rows of 5 dots shows 3 × 5 = 15. Turn it on its side and you get 5 rows of 3, which shows 5 × 3 = 15.
Multiplication on a number line
Start at 0 and make equal jumps. 4 jumps of 3 land on 12, so 4 × 3 = 12.
Properties to remember
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Order does not matter. | 3 × 8 = 8 × 3 = 24 |
| A number times 1 stays the same. | 9 × 1 = 9 |
| A number times 0 is 0. | 9 × 0 = 0 |
| Times 10: put a 0 after the number. | 6 × 10 = 60 |
| Times 2 doubles the number. | 7 × 2 = 14 |

Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number
Split the 2-digit number into tens and ones. Multiply each part, then add. For 14 × 3: 10 × 3 = 30 and 4 × 3 = 12. Then 30 + 12 = 42.
Multiplication and division are linked
The numbers 4, 9 and 36 make a fact family: 4 × 9 = 36, 9 × 4 = 36, 36 ÷ 9 = 4 and 36 ÷ 4 = 9. You can use a multiplication fact to find a division answer or a missing number.
Solved examples
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Adding the factors, so 6 × 4 = 10 | Multiplication is repeated addition of equal groups. 6 × 4 = 24. |
| Thinking 8 × 0 = 8 | Any number times 0 is 0. |
| Thinking 3 × 7 and 7 × 3 are different | Both equal 21. |
| Using multiplication for unequal groups | Check that every group is the same size first. |
| Forgetting the second step in a two-step problem | Multiply first, then add or subtract. |
| Mixing up factor and product | In 3 × 4 = 12, the factors are 3 and 4 and the product is 12. |
Multiplication in daily life
Bicycles have 2 wheels each, egg trays have rows of eggs, cinema seats are in rows, and shops price items in equal packets. All of these use multiplication.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is multiplication for Class 3?
Multiplication is a quick way to add equal groups. 3 groups of 4 make 3 × 4 = 12.
What are factors and product?
The numbers you multiply are the factors. The answer is the product. In 3 × 4 = 12, the factors are 3 and 4 and the product is 12.
How is multiplication related to repeated addition?
Multiplication is repeated addition of the same number. 5 + 5 + 5 = 3 × 5 = 15.
What is an array?
An array is an arrangement of objects in equal rows and columns. It helps you see a multiplication fact.
Does the order of numbers change the product?
No. 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 both equal 24.
What is any number multiplied by 1?
The number stays the same. 9 × 1 = 9.
What is any number multiplied by 0?
The answer is always 0. 9 × 0 = 0.
How do I multiply a number by 10?
Put a 0 after the number. 6 × 10 = 60.
How do I learn the multiplication tables?
Start with the 2, 5 and 10 tables and look for patterns. Use skip counting and arrays for the other tables.
How do I multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number?
Split the 2-digit number into tens and ones, multiply each part and add. 14 × 3 = 30 + 12 = 42.
How are multiplication and division linked?
They are opposite operations. If 6 × 7 = 42, then 42 ÷ 7 = 6 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7.
How do I solve a multiplication word problem?
Find the number of groups and the number in each group. Multiply them, then do any extra step the story asks for.
