What is a division word problem?
A division word problem is a short story that asks you to share something equally or to put things into equal groups. The question at the end tells you what to find. You turn the story into a division sentence and solve it using your times tables.
Steps to solve a division word problem
- Read the story slowly and find the question.
- Underline the numbers and decide what each number means.
- Decide the operation. Sharing equally or making groups means divide.
- Write the number sentence, for example 48 ÷ 6.
- Solve it with a times table fact: 6 × 8 = 48, so 48 ÷ 6 = 8.
- Write the answer in a sentence with the unit.
- Check by multiplying: 6 × 8 = 48.
Clue words that tell you to divide
Words such as shared equally, among, each, in each group, per, equal rows, equal parts and groups of point to division. Words such as in all, altogether and total point to addition. Words such as left, fewer and gave away point to subtraction. Times, double and in all (with equal groups) point to multiplication.
Sharing: finding the size of each group
When the number of groups is given, we find how many are in each group. 24 apples are packed equally into 4 baskets. 24 ÷ 4 = 6, so each basket has 6 apples.
Grouping: finding the number of groups
When the size of each group is given, we find how many groups we can make. Riya has 18 pencils and puts 3 in each box. 18 ÷ 3 = 6, so she needs 6 boxes.
Word problems with a remainder
Sometimes the sharing is not exact. Divide first, then read the story to decide what the remainder means. Sometimes we ignore it, and sometimes we need one more group.
- The left-over is the answer: 23 sweets shared among 5 children. 23 ÷ 5 = 4 remainder 3. 3 sweets are left over.
- We need one more group: 50 children go on buses that carry 8 each. 50 ÷ 8 = 6 remainder 2. The 2 children need a bus too, so 7 buses are needed.
Choosing add, subtract, multiply or divide
Ask what is happening in the story. Putting together is addition. Taking away or finding the difference is subtraction. Equal groups with the total unknown is multiplication. Sharing equally or finding how many groups is division.
Two-step word problems
Some stories need two operations. Solve one step at a time and write the answer of the first step before the second. For example, 36 sweets are shared equally among 6 children and each child eats 2. First 36 ÷ 6 = 6 sweets each. Then 6 − 2 = 4 sweets left for each child.
Finding the missing number
Division and multiplication are opposites, so a times table fact finds a missing number. In ? ÷ 4 = 8, the missing number is 4 × 8 = 32. In 45 ÷ ? = 5, the missing number is 45 ÷ 5 = 9.
Solved examples
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Adding when the story shares equally | Sharing equally means divide. Read the clue words. |
| Dividing the small number by the big number | The total is divided by the number of groups or the group size. |
| Ignoring a remainder that needs an extra group | Read the question again. Left-over children or items may need one more bus, box or pack. |
| Writing only a number as the answer | Write the answer as a sentence with the unit. |
| Not checking the answer | Multiply the answer by the divisor and add the remainder. |
| Doing both steps at once in a two-step story | Solve step one and write its answer. Then do step two. |
Division word problems in daily life
We use division when we share sweets, pack eggs in trays, put children in teams, seat people on buses and cut ribbon into pieces. Asking your child to make up a sharing story from the things at home is a good way to practise.
