Place value: the key to every sum

A 3-digit number is made of hundreds, tens and ones. In 468 there are 4 hundreds, 6 tens and 8 ones, so 468 = 400 + 60 + 8. When you add or subtract, always line up hundreds under hundreds, tens under tens and ones under ones.

Remember: Start with the ones column. Move to the tens column and then to the hundreds column.

Adding 3-digit numbers

Add the ones first. If the ones make 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 ten to the tens column. Do the same with the tens. For 346 + 278: ones 6 + 8 = 14, write 4 and carry 1. Tens 4 + 7 + 1 = 12, write 2 and carry 1. Hundreds 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The sum is 624.

Subtracting 3-digit numbers

Subtract the ones first. If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, regroup. Take 1 ten from the tens column and make it 10 ones. For 503 − 168 you must regroup twice because there are 0 tens. Break 1 hundred into 10 tens, then break 1 ten into 10 ones. The difference is 335.

Finding the missing number in subtraction

Use the opposite operation. If 512 − __ = 247, the missing number is 512 − 247 = 265. If __ − 168 = 275, the missing number is 275 + 168 = 443. Always check by putting the number back into the sum.

Adding and subtracting more than two numbers

Work from left to right, or add the numbers that are easy to join first. For 125 + 238 + 76, add 125 + 238 = 363 and then 363 + 76 = 439. For 500 − 135 − 87 take the numbers away one at a time to get 278.

Mental maths tricks

  • Add tens and hundreds first: 345 + 20 = 365.
  • Make a friendly number: 199 + 46 is 200 + 46 − 1 = 245.
  • Number partners: 35 + 65 = 100 and 250 + 750 = 1000.
  • Doubles: 150 + 150 = 300.
  • Count back: 700 − 200 = 500 by counting back 2 hundreds.

Number line jumps

Draw a number line and jump forward to add or backward to subtract. Start at 350. Jump 200 forward to 550, then 50 back to 500. Number line jumps show why sums work.

Estimating to check an answer

Round each number to the nearest ten or hundred to check if an answer is sensible. 346 + 278 is about 350 + 280 = 630, so an answer of 624 is sensible and 514 is not.

Word problems and higher order thinking

Read the story twice. Circle the numbers. Decide if each number makes the total go up (words like joined, got, more, in all) or go down (words like left, gave, got off, fewer). Write the number sentence, solve it and write the answer with its unit. Higher order thinking and Olympiad style questions often need two steps, such as 856 − 129 + 74.

Number puzzles

Number puzzles ask you to find numbers that fit a rule, such as picking numbers that add up to a total or finding the missing number in a magic sum. Try one number at a time and check the total.

Solved examples

Example 1. 247 + 135: ones 7 + 5 = 12, tens 4 + 3 + 1 = 8, hundreds 2 + 1 = 3. The sum is 382.
Example 2. 624 − 258: ones 14 − 8 = 6, tens 11 − 5 = 6, hundreds 5 − 2 = 3. The difference is 366.
Example 3. 900 − 457 = 443. Check: 443 + 457 = 900.
Example 4. 75 + 25 + 40 = 100 + 40 = 140.
Example 5. __ + 169 = 503. The missing number is 503 − 169 = 334.
Example 6. 640 books, 275 lent and 120 returned: 640 − 275 + 120 = 485 books.
Example 7. 450 + 50 − 150: 450 + 50 = 500 and 500 − 150 = 350.
Example 8. 1000 − 275 = 725. Check: 725 + 275 = 1000.

Common mistakes

MistakeCorrection
Forgetting to add the carried 1Write the carry above the next column and add it.
Taking the smaller digit from the bigger digit, such as 0 − 5 = 5Regroup. You cannot take 5 from 0.
Not lining up the placesPut hundreds under hundreds, tens under tens and ones under ones.
Regrouping but forgetting to reduce the next digit by 1When you take 1 ten, the tens digit goes down by 1.
Adding when the story says left or gaveLook for words that mean take away.
Not checking the answerAdd the answer to the smaller number to see if you get the bigger number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a sum and a difference?

A sum is the answer to an addition and a difference is the answer to a subtraction. In 346 + 278 = 624 the sum is 624. In 503 − 168 = 335 the difference is 335.

How do I add 3-digit numbers with carrying?

Add the ones first. If they make 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 ten to the tens column. Do the same for the tens and then add the hundreds.

How do I subtract 3-digit numbers with regrouping?

If the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit, take 1 from the next column to the left and make it 10 in the column you are working on. Then subtract.

How do I subtract when there is a zero in the tens place?

Break 1 hundred into 10 tens first. Then break 1 of those tens into 10 ones. For example, in 503 − 168 you get 4 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones.

How do I find the missing number in a subtraction?

Use the opposite operation. If 512 − __ = 247, find 512 − 247 = 265. If __ − 168 = 275, find 275 + 168 = 443.

How do I add three numbers?

Add the first two numbers, then add the third number to the result. You can also join the numbers that are easy to add first, such as 75 + 25.

How can I check my answer?

Use the opposite operation. Add the difference to the smaller number to get the bigger number. Subtract one number from the sum to get the other number.

What is a quick way to add 99 or 199 in my head?

Add 100 or 200 and then take away 1. For example, 346 + 99 = 346 + 100 − 1 = 445.

Why is place value important in addition and subtraction?

Place value tells you which digits belong together. You add ones to ones, tens to tens and hundreds to hundreds so that every digit has the right value.

How do I know whether to add or subtract in a word problem?

Look for words. Words like joined, got and in all mean add. Words like left, gave away and got off mean subtract. Draw a picture to be sure.

What are higher order thinking questions in maths?

They are questions that need more than one step or some reasoning, such as finding a missing number in a story, spotting a mistake or choosing the bigger answer without a full calculation.
