Geometry for Class 3: complete topic guide
What is geometry?
Geometry is the part of mathematics that studies shapes, their parts and where they sit. In Class 3 you learn the names and properties of flat shapes (2D) and solid shapes (3D), how to describe lines and angles, and how to find lines of symmetry.
Flat (2D) shapes
A flat shape lies on paper. It has length and width but no thickness.
| Shape | Straight sides | Corners | Remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Triangle | 3 | 3 | Tri means three. |
| Square | 4 | 4 | All sides equal and 4 right angles. |
| Rectangle | 4 | 4 | Opposite sides equal and 4 right angles. |
| Pentagon | 5 | 5 | Penta means five. |
| Hexagon | 6 | 6 | Hexa means six. |
| Circle | 0 | 0 | One curved edge and no corners. |
Solid (3D) shapes
A solid shape takes up space. A face is a surface, an edge is where two faces meet and a vertex (corner) is where edges meet.
| Solid | Flat faces | Curved surfaces | Edges | Vertices | Real object |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cube | 6 | 0 | 12 | 8 | Dice |
| Cuboid | 6 | 0 | 12 | 8 | Brick or shoebox |
| Square-based pyramid | 5 | 0 | 8 | 5 | Pyramid of Giza |
| Cylinder | 2 | 1 | 2 curved | 0 | Tin can |
| Cone | 1 | 1 | 1 curved | 1 | Party hat |
| Sphere | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Football |
A drawing of a solid on paper is flat. The real object, such as a dice or a ball, is solid.
Points, lines, segments and rays
| Name | End points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Point | Not applicable | An exact spot. |
| Line segment | 2 | A straight part with a start and an end. It can be measured. |
| Ray | 1 | Starts at a point and goes on for ever in one direction. |
| Line | 0 | Goes on for ever in both directions. |
Angles and right angles
An angle is formed where two lines meet. A right angle is a square corner and measures 90°. It is one quarter of a full turn: 14 × 360° = 90°. Test a corner by fitting the corner of a sheet of paper into it.
Open and closed figures
A closed figure joins up all the way round, so it has an inside and an outside. An open figure has a gap. Only closed figures with straight sides are called polygons such as triangles and squares.
Lines of symmetry
A line of symmetry cuts a shape into two halves that match exactly when folded.
| Shape | Lines of symmetry |
|---|---|
| Rectangle (not a square) | 2 |
| Square | 4 |
| Equilateral triangle | 3 |
| Circle | Many |
Cutting, joining and nets
A square cut from corner to corner gives 2 equal triangles. Each triangle is 12 of the square. A net is a flat pattern that folds into a solid. A cube net has 6 squares joined edge to edge, for example a row of 4 with one square above and one below.
Solved examples
Common mistakes
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Calling a sphere a circle | A circle is flat. A sphere is a solid ball. |
| Saying a turned square has a new name | Turning does not change the name. |
| Counting 24 edges on a cube | Count each edge once. A cube has 12 edges. |
| Calling every four-sided shape a square | A square needs 4 equal sides. A long rectangle is not a square. |
| Saying a cone has 2 flat faces | A cone has 1 flat face and 1 curved surface. |
| Naming an open figure as a shape | Check that the boundary joins all the way round. |
Geometry in daily life
Dice are cubes, bricks are cuboids, footballs are spheres, tins are cylinders and party hats are cones. Clock hands make a right angle at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. Windows and doors are usually rectangles and wheels are circles.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is geometry for Class 3?
Geometry is the study of shapes. In Class 3 it means naming flat and solid shapes, describing their sides, corners, faces and edges, and learning about lines, right angles and symmetry.
What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?
A 2D shape is flat, like a square drawn on paper. A 3D shape is solid and takes up space, like a dice or a ball.
How many sides and corners does a triangle have?
A triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners.
How is a square different from a rectangle?
Both have 4 sides and 4 right angles. A square has all 4 sides equal. A rectangle has equal opposite sides, so it is usually longer than it is wide.
How many faces edges and vertices does a cube have?
A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.
What is the difference between a face an edge and a vertex?
A face is a surface of a solid. An edge is where two faces meet. A vertex is a corner where edges meet.
Does a sphere have flat faces or corners?
No. A sphere has one curved surface, no flat faces, no edges and no corners.
What are the surfaces of a cylinder?
A cylinder has 2 flat circular faces and 1 curved surface.
What is a line segment?
A line segment is a straight part of a line with two end points. You can measure its length.
What is a right angle?
A right angle is a square corner. It measures 90° and fits the corner of a sheet of paper.
What is a line of symmetry?
It is a line that splits a shape into two halves that match exactly when folded. A rectangle has 2 and a square has 4.
Does turning a square change its name?
No. A square stays a square when it is turned. Its sides and corners do not change.
