  • Discuss errors using a model and allow short movement or partner activities.
Subtraction Worksheets for Class 2 Guide Examples and Thinking Questions

How many remain after some objects are taken away? How many more counters are in one row than another? These subtraction worksheets for Class 2 connect pictures, place value and reasoning. Use the printable worksheets offered on the page for written practice and the online activities to test ideas with models.

This general topic resource includes subtraction with pictures, subtraction on a number line, two-digit subtraction without borrowing, subtraction with borrowing or regrouping, missing numbers and word problems. The tasks focus on whole-number answers within two-digit practice. Choose a suitable starting point for the child.

What Is Subtraction?

Subtraction can describe taking away, finding what is missing or comparing two amounts. In 9 − 4 = 5, nine is the starting number, four is subtracted and five is the difference. The − sign means subtract. The equal sign means both sides have the same value.

9 starting counters; 4 removedStart 9 • removed 4Remaining 5

Children can begin by crossing out objects. Later they can count back, count up to find a difference or use place value. The story tells us what the numbers represent.

Subtraction with Pictures and Objects

For 11 − 5, set out eleven counters and remove five. Count the six remaining counters. Different choices of five counters give the same remaining amount. The Counter Takeaway game accepts any selection with the correct count.

Make sure removed objects are clearly marked so they are not counted again. The models keep crossed-out objects visible to show both the starting collection and the amount taken away.

Finding the Difference by Comparing

Suppose one row has twelve counters and another has eight. Pair one counter from each row until the shorter row is used. Four counters in the longer row remain unpaired, so twelve is four more than eight. This models 12 − 8 = 4 without physically taking eight objects out of the longer row.

Row A has 12, row B has 8; 8 pairs matchedA 12 counters • B 8 countersPairs matched 8Unmatched in A 4

Comparison stories often ask “how many more?” or “how many fewer?”. Read the whole story and identify the two amounts before choosing the calculation.

Number Line Subtraction for Class 2

To calculate 17 − 4, begin at seventeen and make four one-step jumps left. Land on sixteen, fifteen, fourteen and thirteen. The answer is thirteen. The starting point is not the first jump.

Start 17, subtract 4; 4 jumps made1713Start 17 • subtract 4Distance back 4

For a two-digit amount being subtracted, use tens and ones. To subtract twelve, one jump of ten and two jumps of one cover a total distance of twelve. Different routes can lead to the same final number.

Two-Digit Subtraction Without Borrowing

For 57 − 24, subtract four ones from seven ones, leaving three ones. Subtract two tens from five tens, leaving three tens. The result is 33. No exchange is needed because there are enough ones already.

TO
57
− 24
33

Always align the digits by place value. A single-digit number belongs in the ones column, not beneath the tens digit.

Subtraction With Borrowing or Regrouping

Consider 52 − 27. Two ones are not enough to remove seven ones. Exchange one of the five tens for ten ones. The starting value is now represented as four tens and twelve ones. It is still fifty-two.

4 tens and 12 onesTensOnes4 tens + 12 onesValue 52

Remove seven ones from twelve ones to leave five ones. Remove two tens from four tens to leave two tens. Therefore 52 − 27 = 25. The tens digit must decrease when a ten is exchanged.

Regrouping check

5 tens + 2 ones= 4 tens + 12 ones= 52.

After removing 2 tens and 7 ones, 2 tens and 5 ones remain.

25 + 27 = 52 checks the subtraction.

“Borrowing” is a familiar name for this exchange. It is not adding a new ten to the starting amount. The Exchange and Subtract Lab lets children carry out the exchange and then remove the required blocks.

Subtracting from a Whole Ten

For 40 − 6, exchange one ten to represent forty as three tens and ten ones. Remove six ones, leaving three tens and four ones. The answer is 34. A zero in the ones place does not prevent subtraction; place value explains the exchange.

Bridge Through Ten for Mental Subtraction

For 14 − 8, first remove four to reach ten. Four of the eight still need to be removed. Ten minus four is six. Therefore 14 − 8 = 6.

Solved example

13 − 7 = 13 − 3 − 4 = 10 − 4 = 6.

The seven has been split into three and four. The total removed remains seven.

This method can be shown using counters or backward jumps. Children should explain both parts removed, rather than stopping as soon as they reach ten.

Missing Numbers in Subtraction

In 24 − □ = 15, the missing number is the amount removed. Count up from fifteen to twenty-four to find nine, then check 24 − 9 = 15.

In □ − 8 = 17, the missing number is the starting amount. Add seventeen and eight to get twenty-five. Check 25 − 8 = 17. The position of the blank determines what needs finding.

Checking Subtraction with Addition

Add the amount removed to the difference. If the result matches the starting amount, the subtraction is consistent. For 63 − 28 = 35, check 35 + 28 = 63. The related addition facts and subtraction facts describe the same whole and its two parts.

Subtraction does not generally keep the same answer when its numbers are swapped. In this introductory resource, subtraction tasks are chosen to have non-negative whole-number answers.

Subtraction Word Problems for Class 2 with Answers

  1. A tray holds 46 counters. A child removes 18. How many remain?

46 − 18 = 28 counters. Regroup one ten, then subtract ones and tens.

  2. One shelf has 32 books and another has 19. How many more are on the first shelf?

32 − 19 = 13 books. The answer is the difference between the two amounts.

  3. A child had some stickers, gave away 7 and has 16 left. How many were there at first?

    16 + 7 = 23. Check 23 − 7 = 16.

  4. There were 50 paper tokens. Now 27 remain. How many were used?

    50 − 27 = 23 tokens were used.

  5. There are 18 counters. Five are removed, then another four. How many remain?

    18 − 5 − 4 = 9. A total of nine counters was removed.

Subtraction Reasoning and Thinking Questions

What happens when zero is subtracted? The number stays unchanged, because nothing is removed. For example, 38 − 0 = 38.

What happens when a number is subtracted from itself? Nothing remains. For example, 16 − 16 = 0.

What happens if both numbers increase by the same amount? The difference stays the same. For example, 15 − 8 and 17 − 10 both equal seven. Both points moved equally, so the distance between them stayed unchanged.

What if the starting number stays fixed but one more is removed? The difference decreases by one. For example, 12 − 4 = 8 and 12 − 5 = 7.

Can several subtraction sentences have answer six? Yes. Examples include 9 − 3 = 6 and 14 − 8 = 6. The open puzzle accepts any pair meeting the stated conditions.

Common Borrowing Mistakes and Corrections

A common error is subtracting the smaller digit from the larger digit in each column without keeping the meaning of the full numbers. Another is adding ten ones while leaving all the tens unchanged. Use a model to show that exchanging one ten means one fewer tens rod and ten more ones cubes.

In a number-line task, check the direction, total distance and landing number. In a word problem, check what the answer counts. In a missing-number task, check whether the blank represents the starting amount, the amount removed or the difference.

Learning with Pictures Listening and Movement

Children can cross out digital counters, pair rows, manipulate blocks, listen to a task or explain a method to a partner. These approaches give several ways to understand the same idea without assigning children fixed learning-style labels.

For a practical activity, use bundles of ten sticks and loose sticks. Exchange one bundle for ten loose sticks before subtracting. For movement, step backward along floor number cards. For speaking and listening, ask a partner to describe a subtraction and have the other child build it.

Using Printable and Online Subtraction Practice Together

Begin with a small model, solve a few written questions and return to the model when a mistake needs explaining. Use the hints and feedback to discuss a strategy. Keep sessions short and select tasks that match the child's learning sequence.

This is general Class 2 subtraction practice. The printable worksheet remains available through the page's existing download option, while the online activities provide interactive practice and explanations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do subtraction worksheets for Class 2 cover?

This page practises picture subtraction, number lines, two-digit sums with and without regrouping, comparison, missing numbers and word problems.

What is subtraction without borrowing?

The starting ones digit is large enough to subtract the required ones, so no ten needs to be exchanged. For example, 64 − 21 = 43.

What does borrowing mean in subtraction?

One ten is exchanged for ten ones. The value stays the same, but there are fewer tens and more ones available to subtract.

Why must the tens digit decrease after borrowing?

The ten extra ones came from one tens rod. Leaving that rod unchanged would count its value twice.

How do I subtract from a number ending in zero?

Exchange one ten for ten ones when needed. For example, 30 becomes two tens and ten ones before subtracting seven to get twenty-three.

How do subtraction number lines work?

Start at the first number and jump left by the amount being subtracted. Count the jumps or total distance, not the starting point.

Can subtraction mean finding how many more?

Yes. Pairing objects in two rows shows the unmatched amount, which is the difference between the two totals.

How can addition check subtraction?

Add the difference and the amount removed. They should give the starting amount.

How do I solve a missing starting number?

Add the amount removed to the amount left. For example, □ − 6 = 15 has starting number twenty-one.

Are the questions read aloud?

Optional read-aloud is available when browser speech works. The text always remains visible and can be read by an adult.

Are these worksheets from a particular textbook chapter?

This is a general topic page for Class 2 subtraction practice.

Do the activities need dragging?

No. Children use tap buttons, number fields, sliders and native selectors. The topic, model and controls share one activity card.
