🔍 Locate the digit positions
An identifying tens and ones worksheet for Class 1 asks children to read a number and identify the digits in its labelled positions. The rightmost digit of a whole number is in the ones place. In a two-digit number, the next position to the left is tens. Connect this written structure with a model of complete groups of ten and individual ones.
🏷️ Follow the answer headings
A worksheet may ask for ones before tens even though the numeral is normally read from left to right. Children need to match each digit to the answer heading, rather than copy the digits into the first available spaces. Pointing to the requested place and naming its unit helps make this connection explicit.
🧱 Separate digit, place and value
These words describe related but different information. In sixty-eight, the tens digit is six, its place is tens and its contribution is sixty. The ones digit is eight and contributes eight. Asking how many tens therefore needs a different response from asking what those tens are worth. Use expanded form to check that both contributions combine to make the original number.
0️⃣ Include zero and single-digit quantities
A number ending in zero has no loose ones in its usual grouped form. A single-digit quantity has no complete ten, so a chart can show zero tens without placing a leading zero in the usual numeral. Compare reversed digits using objects: changing positions usually changes the value, even when the same two digit symbols remain.
🎮 Connect charts, models and paper
Use the existing page download option for the printable identifying tens and ones worksheet. The online quiz checks understanding, while the separate activities support chart entry, digit inspection, repairs and equivalent forms. If a child is uncertain, return to blocks, read the number aloud and identify each unit before completing the written record.
💬 Identifying Tens and Ones Worksheet FAQs
❓ How do you identify tens and ones in a number?
The rightmost digit is ones. In a two-digit number, the digit immediately to its left is tens. Read the number and match each digit to its heading.
❓ Which digit is in the ones place?
The rightmost digit of a whole number is in the ones place.
❓ Which digit is in the tens place?
For a two-digit whole number, the left digit is in the tens place.
❓ Is the tens digit the same as its value?
No. A tens digit counts groups of ten; its contribution is that digit multiplied by ten.
❓ What if the worksheet asks for ones first?
Follow the headings. Write the ones digit in the Ones space and the tens digit in the Tens space, regardless of which answer field appears first.
❓ How do you record a single-digit number in a tens-and-ones chart?
Record zero complete tens and the appropriate number of ones. The usual numeral does not need a leading zero.
❓ What does zero in the ones place mean?
It means no individual ones remain outside the complete tens in the usual grouped representation.
❓ Why do reversed digits make different numbers?
Each digit occupies a different place after the swap. Its contribution changes accordingly, unless the two digits are identical.
❓ How does expanded form help with identifying tens and ones?
It separates the contribution of the tens from the contribution of the ones. Adding them checks the original number.
❓ How can I help a child who mixes up the answer columns?
Read each heading aloud, point to the matching digit and use a grouped model to check the completed chart.
❓ Can a number be represented with more than nine loose ones?
Yes, after opening tens. Regroup those ones into complete tens before reading the usual tens and ones digits.
❓ Where can I find the worksheet and online answers?
Use the existing page download option for the printable worksheet. Online quiz answers appear after End Quiz or timeout. Games provide their own checking feedback.
Read the heading, locate the digit and explain its value.
