📝 Subtraction Online Quiz for Class 1
Question 1 of 20 • Answered: 0/20
Seven counters are shown and three are crossed out. How many remain?
🎮 Subtraction Online Games for Class 1
Remove tens and ones, align a column sum, create a four-block difference, jump back in tens and select an efficient two-move strategy.
1. 🧱 Remove Thirteen from Forty-Six
The model has four tens and six ones. Tap blocks to mark exactly one ten and three ones as removed. Tap again to restore a block. Then record what remains.
Ready to play!
2. 📐 Align the Subtraction Columns
Calculate 63 − 21. The bottom digits are initially in the wrong columns. Select a digit tile, place it under Tens or Ones, and record the result.
Ready to play!
3. 🏗️ Create a Four-Block Difference
Twenty blocks are shared between two towers, starting with ten in each. Move blocks so the LEFT tower has exactly FOUR more blocks than the right tower.
Ready to play!
4. 🦘 Jump Back in Tens
Start at seventy-six and subtract thirty by making three backward jumps of ten.
Jumps of ten: 0 • Current number: 76
Ready to play!
5. 🧭 Find a Two-Move Strategy
Solve each subtraction using exactly TWO one-unit moves. Choose counting back from the start or counting up across the gap, then make the moves.
20 − 18
Choose a method.

🧠 Subtraction Online Activities for Class 1
Build an addition check, plan a two-step subtraction, connect a calculation chain, repair totals and sort subtraction story types.
6. 🔗 Build the Addition Check
The subtraction is 16 − 9 = 7. Select the TWO part cards that should be added to rebuild the starting sixteen. Either addend order works.
□ + □ = 16
Ready to play!
7. 🚂 Plan Two Subtraction Steps
Start with twenty-eight. Reach thirteen using exactly TWO subtraction steps. Choose from subtract ten, five or one. Different step orders can work.
28
Ready to play!
8. 🔗 Connect the Calculation Chain
Begin at fifty-two. Choose the calculation card whose starting number matches your current number. Use every card to reach twenty.
Current number: 52
Ready to play!
9. 🔧 Repair the Two-Digit Results
All three calculations need corrected results. Subtract ones from ones and tens from tens; no regrouping is needed.
68 − 24 = □
75 − 32 = □
49 − 17 = □
Ready to play!
10. 🏷️ Sort the Subtraction Stories
Choose a story card, then identify whether it asks for a remaining amount or a difference between groups.
Ready to play!
✏️ Picture and Two-Digit Subtraction Practice
1. 🟣 Read a Crossed-Out Model
Fourteen counters are shown. Five are crossed out. Record the remaining amount.
Ready to explore.
2. 🧱 Record a Column Result
Calculate 82 − 41 without regrouping. Record the tens and ones of the result.
82 − 41 = □
Ready to explore.
3. 🧩 Find an Amount Removed
Fifteen flags are ready. Some are packed away and eight remain. Record how many were packed away.
15 − □ = 8
Ready to explore.
4. 🧠 Plan a Subtraction Check
Arrange the three steps in a useful order.
Ready to explore.
5. ✨ Make a Subtraction Picture
Choose a starting group from zero to twenty and an amount to remove. Create a picture and explain its subtraction sentence. This exploration is not graded.
Ready to explore.
💡 Subtraction Learning Tips
👩🏫 Five Parent and Teacher Tips
- Identify the starting quantity, amount removed and remaining quantity.
- Use comparison stories as well as take-away stories.
- Count movements rather than including the starting point as a jump.
- Align tens and ones for two-digit work.
- Use a related addition fact to check the answer.
🌟 Six Tips for Students
- Read the minus sign carefully.
- Check which number is the start.
- Cross out only the requested amount.
- Count back for small removals or count a short gap when helpful.
- Keep ones under ones and tens under tens.
- Add the removed part back to check your result.

➖ Connect subtraction with quantities
Printable subtraction worksheets for Class 1 support the connection between objects, drawings and written calculations. A take-away model starts with a complete group, removes some objects and asks how many remain. Identify each quantity before calculating. The equals sign records that the calculation and its result have equal value.
🟣 Cross out carefully and compare fairly
Picture subtraction makes it possible to inspect the starting amount and the objects removed. Count each remaining object once. Comparison problems ask a different question: how much more one group contains than another. Align or pair objects to reveal the unmatched part, and explain why that part represents the difference.
↩️ Choose an efficient counting method
Counting backwards works well when only a small quantity is removed. Mark the start and count the actual moves. When the two numbers are close, counting up across the gap can be shorter. For example, the gap from sixteen to nineteen is three. Both methods can represent subtraction when children understand which quantity the movement measures.
🧱 Extend to two-digit subtraction
For subtraction without regrouping, work with the ones and tens in their correct columns. Use a model with each ten visibly containing ten unit blocks. Keep the initial examples within quantities that can be subtracted directly in each column. Removing a ten reduces the total by ten, while removing one individual unit reduces it by one.
✅ Check and explain the result
Add the amount removed to the result to reconstruct the starting number. Subtracting zero leaves the original quantity unchanged, and removing the whole group leaves zero. Use the existing page download option for the printable worksheets, then practise selected skills in the separate online quiz and games. Ask children to explain their method and correct a model before repeating a calculation.
💬 Subtraction Worksheets FAQs
❓ Which subtraction activities should beginners try first?
Use small groups of objects and clear take-away pictures. Introduce the matching written sentence alongside the action.
❓ What does picture subtraction show?
It shows the starting group, the objects removed or crossed out and the objects that remain.
❓ How do children subtract on a number line?
For counting back, mark the starting number and move left by the amount removed. Count each move once.
❓ Why is the starting point not the first jump?
A jump is a movement between two positions. Before any movement, nothing has been subtracted.
❓ When is counting the gap useful?
It can be efficient when the two numbers are close. Count the steps from the smaller number to the larger.
❓ What is subtraction without regrouping?
It is subtraction that can be completed in each place-value column without exchanging a ten for ten ones.
❓ How should two-digit subtraction be aligned?
Place ones below ones and tens below tens. Check the headings before calculating.
❓ Can subtraction mean comparing quantities?
Yes. It can find the difference between two groups as well as the amount left after taking away.
❓ Can the order of the two numbers be swapped?
Keep the starting number and amount removed in their stated positions. Swapping them generally changes the subtraction.
❓ How can addition check a subtraction answer?
Add the amount removed to the remaining amount. Their sum should equal the starting quantity.
❓ What happens when zero is subtracted?
The starting quantity remains unchanged because no objects are removed.
❓ Where can I find the worksheet and online answers?
Use the existing page download option for the printable resource. Quiz answers appear after End Quiz or timeout. Each game provides its own checking feedback.
Read the quantities, choose a method and check the result.
