This Utsav Class 1 worksheet supports Chapter 9 of NCERT Joyful Mathematics. Children recognise, extend, repair and create patterns through festival-style designs, shapes, movements and numbers. Use the worksheet download option already available on this page for paper practice alongside the online quiz and games.

A repeating pattern contains a group that appears again in the same order. Ask children to identify the smallest repeating unit rather than guessing from only the last item. A unit can include two different objects, repeated pairs or a group of three. Colour, shape, size and direction can each carry a rule.

For a missing item in the middle, inspect both sides of the gap and check the completed sequence. For an incorrect item, state the intended rule before asking children to repair it. Patterns also work with actions: children can tap, stamp or wave in a repeating rhythm without needing to read.

Number patterns need a clear rule, such as add five each time or count backward by one. Growing patterns change rather than repeat an identical unit; adding one dot to each new group is one example. Invite children to describe what stays the same, what changes and how their rule predicts the next part.

💡 Pattern Learning Tips

For Parents and Teachers

  • Ask children to say the complete repeating unit.
  • Change one feature at a time when introducing a new pattern.
  • State the rule for number and growing-pattern tasks.
  • Accept different creative patterns when the chosen rule is followed consistently.

For Students

  • Look at the whole sequence.
  • Find the group that repeats.
  • Keep the same order.
  • Check both sides of a missing space.
  • Use the stated number rule.
  • Explain why your next item fits.

❓ Utsav Class 1 Worksheet FAQs

Which NCERT chapter is Utsav?

Utsav is Chapter 9 of NCERT Joyful Mathematics for Class 1. It explores patterns through pictures, objects, actions and numbers.

What is a repeating unit?

It is the smallest group of items that repeats in the same order throughout a repeating pattern.

How do I teach patterns to Class 1?

Begin with objects or actions, repeat a clear group several times and ask the child to continue and explain the rule.

What is the difference between repeating and growing patterns?

A repeating pattern cycles through the same unit. A growing pattern changes according to a rule, such as adding one dot each time.

How can children find a missing item in the middle?

Identify the rule, inspect the items before and after the gap and check the entire completed pattern.

Can patterns use sounds and actions?

Yes. A repeated sequence of taps, stamps or movements follows the same idea as a visual repeating pattern.

Why should a number-pattern rule be stated clearly?

A short sequence may fit several possible rules. Stating the intended rule makes the task clear and the answer checkable.

What should I do if a child guesses the next item?

Ask the child to point out the repeating unit and use it to predict two or three more items, then explain the choice.
