🎯 Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Worksheet Learning Objective
Understand joining and combining stories, represent their quantities and write addition sentences with totals within 20.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify the question and select useful quantities.
- Represent story parts using counters, drawings or an equation.
- Find a total or missing part.
- Explain and check a labelled answer.
🏠 Parent Activity: Kitchen Counter Café
Use six spoons and four forks. Let the child predict the total, arrange both groups and write 6 + 4 = 10 utensils.
Ask which quantities belong together and how to check. The child can draw both groups and explain the answer. Add one spoon and predict the new total before recounting.
💡 Addition Story Learning Tips
Five Parent and Teacher Tips
Read unfamiliar words aloud. Ask the child to retell the story. Model both quantities. Check what the question asks. Encourage a labelled answer.
Six Tips for Students
Read the story. Find the known quantities. Identify the question. Build a model. Add the needed quantities. Check the answer and its label.

Understand the story first
An addition word problems worksheet for Class 1 connects number facts with everyday situations. Children may combine two collections or find a new total after more objects arrive. Before calculating, ask the learner to explain what happens and what needs to be found. Reading aloud can support mathematical understanding.
Represent quantities clearly
Use counters, simple circles or a part-whole model. Keep both quantities identifiable so the model represents the story. When counting on, the starting number represents the first quantity and each jump represents one object added. Count the jumps without counting the starting number twice.
Choose quantities by meaning
Avoid choosing an operation from one keyword. Read how the quantities relate and decide which numbers are needed. A story may mention boxes as well as blocks. If the question asks for blocks, do not add the number of boxes to the number of blocks.
Check and explain the answer
Write an addition sentence and label the answer with what it counts: books, tickets or objects. Check the result with a model or another strategy. Adding zero leaves the starting quantity unchanged. Missing-part story sums ask for an unknown quantity rather than always asking for the total.
Combine paper and online practice
