🧠 Shape and Number Patterns Online Activities
Arrange rule cards, complete a robot route, change a pattern’s starting point, sort pattern types and design your own repeating strip.
6. ⚙️ Arrange the Number Machine
The machine starts at four and ADDS FOUR each time. Tap all five number cards to make its output sequence.
Start at 4.

7. 🤖 Travel the Pattern Path
Start in the top-left circle. Visit every square once, moving only sideways, up or down. Follow Circle, Diamond, Square repeatedly and finish in the bottom-right square.
Ready to play!
8. 🔄 Move the Unit’s Starting Point
This circular unit is Leaf, Bell, Heart. Rotate it until Bell comes first. Keep the circular order, then display the shifted unit three times.
Ready to play!
9. 🏷️ Sort the Pattern Rules
Choose a rule card, then send it to Repeating, Growing or Decreasing.
Ready to play!
10. 🎨 Design a Repeating Strip
Create a unit with two to four items using at least two different pictures. Press Repeat to show it three times. This design task has many valid answers.
Choose your unit pictures.

✏️ Patterns Practice for Class 1
1. 🔎 Explore Pattern Structures
Choose a structure. A and B represent different items; C adds a third item. Each display shows three complete units.
Ready to explore.
2. 🍓 Fill Two Missing Places
Repeat Cupcake, Strawberry, Strawberry, Cupcake. Choose each missing item in the second group.
Ready to explore.
3. 🔢 Apply Two Number Rules
Record the next number for each stated rule.
Add two: 3, 5, 7, □
Subtract three: 15, 12, 9, □
Ready to explore.
4. 🧠 Explain a Pattern Method
Arrange the three method cards in a useful order.
Ready to explore.
5. 📝 Make a Real-World Pattern Plan
Choose materials and a structure. Create a plan to try away from the screen. This creative plan is not graded.

💡 Pattern Learning Tips
👩🏫 Five Parent and Teacher Tips
- Show several complete repetitions before asking children to continue.
- Ask children to name the smallest repeating unit.
- Use one changing feature at first, such as colour or size.
- State the intended rule for number patterns.
- Invite children to transfer a pattern from objects to actions.
🌟 Six Tips for Students
- Look at the whole pattern.
- Name each item from left to right.
- Find the part that repeats or the rule that changes the numbers.
- Check a missing item against both sides of its gap.
- Repeat a complete unit when extending a border.
- Explain your rule so someone else can follow it.

🔍 Find the repeating unit
A patterns worksheet for Class 1 helps children notice a rule, describe it and use it consistently. In a repeating pattern, a fixed group returns in the same order. Show enough complete groups for the child to identify the unit. Naming each item aloud and placing a space between repeated groups can make the structure easier to see.
🎨 Copy, extend and repair
Children can explore shape patterns, colour patterns and movement patterns using blocks, picture cards or actions. Begin with two alternating items, then try groups with repeated items, such as AAB or ABB. The letters stand for different items rather than actual alphabet cards. Ask children to copy a complete unit, extend the arrangement and repair a missing or incorrect position.
📈 Separate repeating and growing patterns
A growing pattern changes according to a rule rather than repeating one fixed group. Towers with one more block each time provide a visible example. Let children construct each stage and describe what changes. A repeating arrangement can contain numbers too, so the presence of numerals does not automatically make a pattern a growing sequence.
🔢 State a clear number rule
For number patterns, give a rule that children can apply and check. Adding three, subtracting one or repeating a number pair are different instructions. A short list can fit more than one possible rule, so avoid treating a guessed continuation as the only mathematical possibility. Encourage children to use a number line or counters to show the stated change.
🎮 Connect printable and interactive learning
Use the existing page download option for the printable patterns worksheet. The separate online quiz checks observation and reasoning, while the games support construction, repairs, grouping and rule transfer. After screen practice, ask children to design a border or action sequence with real materials. A useful final question is whether someone else can continue their pattern after hearing its rule.
💬 Patterns Worksheet FAQs
❓ How do I teach patterns to Class 1?
Use movable objects to show complete repeating groups. Name the items together, then copy, extend and describe the rule.
❓ What is a repeating unit?
It is a group that repeats in the same order. When asked for the smallest unit, find the shortest group that recreates the whole arrangement.
❓ What do AB, AAB and ABB mean?
The letters stand for different items. AB alternates two items; AAB repeats two of the first then one of the second; ABB repeats one of the first then two of the second.
❓ How is a growing pattern different from a repeating pattern?
A growing pattern increases according to a rule. A repeating pattern cycles through the same fixed unit.
❓ Are all number patterns growing patterns?
No. A number pair or group can repeat, while other number patterns increase or decrease under a stated rule.
❓ How can children find a missing shape in the middle?
Identify the repeating unit, locate the gap within that unit and check that the completed arrangement fits on both sides.
❓ How do you help a child who guesses the next item?
Return to complete groups. Ask the child to name the unit and show where it begins again.
❓ Can a pattern use sounds or movements?
Yes. Repeated claps, steps or spoken sounds can follow the same structure as a picture pattern. Audio is not needed for the on-screen movement cards.
❓ Why should a number-pattern rule be stated?
A short number list can fit several rules. A stated rule makes the intended continuation clear.
❓ Can two patterns use different pictures but have the same structure?
Yes. For example, two repeated items followed by a different item can be represented using shapes, colours or actions.
❓ What simple pattern activities can we do at home?
Make a border with blocks, create an action sequence or build towers that grow by one block. Ask a partner to copy and explain the rule.
❓ Where are the worksheet and online answers?
Use the existing download option for the printable worksheet. Quiz answers appear after End Quiz or timeout. The games have their own checking feedback.
Find the unit, follow the rule and explain your pattern.
