📖 Making 10 Class 1 Maths Chapter 4 Guide

Read the Making 10 worksheet guide

This Making 10 Class 1 worksheet supports Chapter 4 of NCERT Joyful Mathematics. Children explore number pairs that make ten, zero and numbers from 10 to 20. Use the existing worksheet download option on this page for paper practice alongside the online quiz and games.

A ten frame has two rows of five spaces. Place one counter in each space. Children can see both the occupied spaces and the spaces still needed to make ten. Splitting a full frame into two colours shows number bonds to 10 without changing the total.

For numbers from 11 to 19, keep one complete group of ten and count the extra ones. Sixteen is one ten and six ones, not six tens and one one. Twenty can be shown as two complete groups of ten. Bundling ten loose sticks changes their grouping, not their total quantity.

Zero describes an empty collection. Adding no new counters leaves a quantity unchanged. Practise number order and comparison using the same ten-and-ones models, then ask children to explain what they notice. An adult can read the prompts while children respond by moving, tapping or building.

💡 Making 10 Learning Tips

For Parents and Teachers

  • Use counters before expecting memorised number pairs.
  • Ask how many spaces are empty in a ten frame.
  • Keep a group of ten together while counting extra ones.
  • Ask children to explain regrouping with the same objects.

For Students

  • Look for a full group of ten first.
  • Count empty spaces as well as filled spaces.
  • Put only one counter in each frame space.
  • Count extra ones after ten.
  • Remember that an empty collection has zero objects.
  • Check your model against its number label.

❓ Making 10 Class 1 Worksheet FAQs

Which NCERT chapter is Making 10?

Making 10 is Chapter 4 of NCERT Joyful Mathematics for Class 1. It includes numbers from 10 to 20.

What are number bonds to 10?

They are two parts whose total is ten, such as 1 and 9, 2 and 8, or 5 and 5.

How does a ten frame help children?

Its two rows of five help children see quantities, recognise a full ten and identify the missing part needed to make ten.

How do I explain zero to Class 1?

Remove all objects from a small collection. The empty collection contains zero objects. Connect that idea with the numeral 0.

How can I teach numbers from 11 to 19?

Show one complete ten and the extra ones. For example, 17 is ten and seven more. Count on from ten rather than recounting every object.

Why does bundling ten sticks not change their number?

No sticks are added or removed. The same ten sticks are simply organised as one group of ten.

How is twenty shown using tens?

Twenty is two complete groups of ten, with no loose ones left over.

Should children memorise pairs before using objects?

Begin with objects and pictures. Repeatedly building and discussing the pairs helps children understand and gradually remember them.
